Patient airlifted from Midtown...

Lifestar medical helicopter made an emergency landing on Roane State Hwy. in Midtown Friday morning in response to three-car chain-reaction wreck at the intersection of Ruritan Road.

A patient was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of injuries from the crash. Neither the person’s identity nor the extent of injuries were known at press time.

According to reports, a green SUV and GMC Terrain were stopped at the traffic light when a Toyota Tundra crashed into the back of the green SUV.

Accused killer broke?

Last summer, accused murderer Shawn Smoot insisted he was poor.

Assistant District Attorney General Bill Reedy is now skeptical of that claim and wants a review of Smoot’s indigent status.

“The defendant is currently residing in the community of Corryton, Tenn., which the state recently determined is less than five miles from the residence of John and Brittany Myers, the sister and brother-in-law of the deceased victim in this matter, Brooke Nicole Morris,” Reedy wrote.

An Oak Ridge woman faces four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly providing her son and his friends alcohol.

Misti Dawn Butler, 38, was arrested by Oak Ridge police on April 30.

She’s scheduled to appear in Roane County General Sessions Court in June.

According to the warrant, a therapist told Craig Jordan that his son admitted to drinking while at Butler’s house for spring break.

The warrant said Jordan became suspicious and checked his son’s phone.

Kingston’s search for a city manager will continue Friday with interviews starting at 10 a.m.
Four candidates for the city’s top administrative post will be in Kingston for the interviews.
They will meet with city employees during a cookout from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Kingston City Park pavilion.
The four to be interviewed in Kingston on Friday will be culled from eight potential candidates who were interviewed by speaker phone last week.

Homeless: ‘It can happen so...

Homelessness isn’t just a big-city issue.

Even in rural locales like Roane County, residents are finding themselves on the streets.

They come from all walks of life. Some dealing with lost jobs. Others deal with mental illness.

Steven Jackson said he’s living wherever he can in Kingston after losing the one place he did have to stay.

He was living there without utilities, a violation of Kingston city ordinances.

Judge ends Houston hearing

Hearing after hearing, U.S. Magistrate C. Clifford Shirley Jr. has struggled with a defiant Leon Houston.
Monday morning was no different.
“I have it in every transcript,” Shirley told Houston. “You will not listen to me.”
Houston was indicted in January on one count of possessing firearms while being an unlawful user of a controlled substance.
Last week the government filed a superseding indictment, which replaces the one filed in January.

In addition to the original charge of possessing firearms while being an unlawful user of a controlled substance, he’s now also charged with use of a telephone to threaten an individual.
Houston has been in custody at the Blount County Jail in Maryville since January. The alleged threat occurred on Feb. 10.

Ladd answers sought

After months of holding their tongues on slowdowns that have attended the Ladd Landing Greenway project, Kingston City Council members let loose with a barrage of concerns at a work session on May 7.

Unfortunately, engineer Kent Olson of Vaughn and Melton was the only one present to field the complaints.

Olson was at the meeting as a fill-in for Danl Hall, the man who is actually the chief engineer on the project. Thus, he was unable to answer council’s sometimes-pointed questions as to why the project is experiencing difficulties.

Aytes wants to give back $3,000

Gary Aytes’ contract with the Roane County Board of Education calls for him to get a $3,000 raise this year.
Aytes, the county’s director of schools, wants to forgo the pay increase.
It’s an issue of fairness, he said. 
The 2013-14 proposed budget the school board discussed during a work session on Tuesday does not include across-the-board raises for school system employees.
“It’s really not fair for me to get a raise, and nobody else,” Aytes said.
