Gov. vetoes controversial Ag-Gag...

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam this week said he will veto HB 1191/SB 1248, more commonly known as the “Ag-Gag” Bill.
The bill would have, by restricting photography, made it a crime for whistleblowers to document and expose unethical and illegal activity in horse stables and at industrial agriculture facilities.

Water treatment helps Oak Ridge...

At the announcement of a new facility to deal with mercury at Oak Ridge, U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. called mercury contamination “one of the biggest problems we have from the ColdWar era” and said it must be a priority as cleanup resources become available.
Alexander’s remarks came at a press conference announcing plans for a water treatment facility at the head of the East Fork Poplar Creek.

Fun, focus on college savings

Five bucks and some change will give Tennesseans access to some of the state’s best-known family-friendly attractions later this month.
Across the state, people can visit a minor league baseball game, a museum or zoo on May 29 for only $5.29 each. People can also register online to win prizes and perks that day.
It is all part of an effort to raise awareness about the Tennessee Treasury Department’s TNStars College Savings 529 Program, which offers families a low-cost way to save money for college expenses while receiving certain tax advantages.

Kim Harris, placement director with Roane State Community College, was one of 46 economic development professionals from Tennessee and other states who recently completed the seventh annual Tennessee Basic Economic Development Course in Nashville.

“The interest, engagement and knowledge of the participants made this truly a unique experience,” said Erin Ketelle, course and Tennessee Certified Economic Developer director.

School board OK’s Aytes’ request...

The Roane County Board of Education voted 6-4 last Thursday to allow Director of Schools Gary Aytes to forgo his contracted $3,000 pay raise for the 2013-14 school year.
The proposed budget for the upcoming year does not include across-the-board raises for school system employees, so Aytes said he didn’t think it was fair for him to get the raise.
His salary will remain at $110,250 for the 2013-14 school year.

Lady ‘Cats roll to district title

Championship games separate the good teams from the great ones. 

Thursday evening, it was the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats that were destined for greatness with an impressive 8-1 win over the Coalfield Lady Jackets to win the District 4-A Softball Championship.

The Kingston Lady Jackets found out just how hard Thursday evening, as despite sweeping Stone Memorial in the regular season, the Lady Panthers ended Kingston’s season with a 2-1 victory in the District 4-AA Tournament at Alcoa.
