Library plans TVA thanks

Harriman Public Library wants to honor TVA for the improvements made to the building.

“We are presenting them with a plaque,” said Barbara Pelfrey-Milsaps, library director.

The thank-you reception is Monday, June 17, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Thanks to TVA, many projects were done at the building, including excavating around the building to improve drainage that threatened the foundation.

Rewiring was done and period lighting was installed, and putting new old-style metal tile ceilings placed overhead.

Potential pay raises may be out...

To get the 2013-14 county budget in order, Roane County Commission’s budget committee removed a 2-percent raise for county employees last week.   
“I hate to do that,” Steve Kelley said.
“I do, too,” added Jerry Goddard.
The motion passed unanimously.
“We’ve been trying to maintain staff through this recession,” County Executive Ron Woody said.

A reception at Harriman’s Bank of Roane County honored three retiring board members. Frank L. Faris of Harriman had served on the board for 30 years. He was the retired owner and operator of Norris Creamery. Rhea R. Browder, president and secretary/treasurer of Harriman Oil Co., had served on the board for 12 years. And Jackson T. Rymer, appointed to the board in 1973, practiced public accounting for more than 35 years.

Acorns? We don't need no...

Let the other squirrels forage for nuts- these furry little rodents in Roane County Park have invaded the human world with their appetite for salty snacks. Cheetos, potato chips and bread were among the bushy-tailed creature's feast one Monday, when Roane County Newspapers photographer Kaitlin Keane wandered up on them at lunchtime. It's a midday treat worthy of bringing out even the shyest of the bushy-tailed beasts. Who needs acorns when you have lots of chips at your disposal?

If you can paddle a pumpkin ....

The city of Kingston’s raft is going to be under new management, so to speak, at this year’s July 4th homemade raft race.

Former City manager Jim Pinkerton had been the captain of the Kingston raft for the past five years, but he retired in April.

New Kingston City Manaer David Bolling has agreed to take the helm at the city’s big festival.

He’s been warned he might get wet. The Kingston crew tends to have a friendly mutiny every year toward the end of the race.

McKinney-Stephenson

Candace Elizabeth McKinney and Samuel Virgil Stephenson, both of Kingston, announce their forthcoming marriage.

The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. June 15 in Grace Community Church, Kingston.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Carol Peddicord McKinney of Kingston.

Her grandparents are Loretta Peddicord and the late Carl Peddicord, and Peggy McKinney and the late Floyd McKinney.

The prospective groom is the son of Craig and Tammie Stephenson of Kingston.

Rainy day doesn’t dampen plant...

A rainy May Saturday did little to dampen enthusiasm for Harriman Garden Club's annual plant sale.

Club members said two-thirds of their inventory had been sold with more than an hour left for the annual event.

The plant sale is a fundraiser for the Harriman Garden Club.

Members were on hand to assist with sales and answer questions about how to best care for the plants they were interested in.

Caring Hearts sew to help others

Roane County's Caring Hearts sewing group recently donated 245 quilts to various organizations that help the needy.

Anyone interested in joining the group or donating supplies may call 376-0867.

Materials used for quilts include denim fabric, clothes or sheets; polyester fabric or clothes; cotton sheets (good or stained), blankets; and mattress pads.

No property tax hike in Kingston...

Kingston officials are preparing for the first reading of a 2013-14 budget that seems to promise neither any big outlays nor any big new expenditures.
The draft is on Kingston City Council’s agenda for the regular monthly meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in Kingston Community Center.
The proposed budget carries around $5.5 million in the general fund — close to the same in the water budget — and promises no new property taxes.
