Mr. & Mrs. Scarborough

Elizabeth Ann Steele and Joseph Carter Scarborough were married May 11 at the North Carolina Arboretum, Asheville, N.C.

The Rev. Rick Baumgarner and the Rev. Kate Fiedler Boswell officiated during the 5 p.m. ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Edward Steele Jr. of Easley, S.C. Her grandparents are Jane Young of Monroe, N.C., and the late George Young Jr., and the late Mr. and Mrs. Doyle E. Steele Sr. of Easley.

Tigers rip Washburn in...

If the Rockwood Tigers were looking to build some momentum heading into this weeks’s District 3-A Tournament, they did so on Thursday by routing Washburn in a doubleheader. 

The Tigers took game one, 11-0, and followed that with a 16-0 victory in game two of the evening.

‘Cats extend season, 10-0

After a wild and woolly game between Coalfield and Oliver Springs in their last showdown at Coalfield’s Hightower Field, the rematch was really over before it started as the Bobcats sent the Yellow Jackets packing back with a resounding 10-0 triumph in the opening round of the District 4-A Tournament Friday afternoon under threatening skies at Arrowhead Park. 

Artists sought for Day in the...

The Arts Council of Roane County is issuing a call for artists to participate in its Day in the Park with Artists celebration.

The event will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 29 at Roane County Park pavilion 2 and surrounding areas.

Bobcats suffer heartbreaking loss

So close yet so far. 

That’s the most apt way to describe the Oliver Springs Bobcats having a region berth within grasp before the Oakdale Eagles rallied in extra innings for a 4-3 victory, sending the Eagles to the Region 2-A Tournament and leaving Oliver Springs to ponder what might have been. 

Jones opens district tourney...

Oliver Springs sophomore Courtney Jones fired a no-hitter Tuesday and the Lady ‘Cats tied a school record with 22 wins in downing Jellico 10-0 in the first round of the District 4-A Tournament being played at Wartburg.

The Lady 'Cats struck quickly with an RBI double by Jones and a sacrifice RBI by Kaylee Morgan for the early 2-0 lead.

The District 3-A Softball Tournament came to a close Thursday night at Tellico Plains.

Two Roane County teams, Harriman and Midway, met in the loser’s bracket elimination game. Midway lived to fight another day with a 6-3 win over Harriman. The victory secured Midway a berth in next week’s Region 2-A Tournament.

Pretty much any kid that has ever played baseball has probably dreamed at one point of hitting a game-winning grand slam home run with two outs on a 3-2 pitch.

Annual senior picnic scheduled...

Mid-East Community Action Agency welcomes all area seniors to attend the annual Roane County senior citizen picnic.

The picnic will be from 9:30 am. to 1 p.m. May 17 in the pavilion at Kingston City Park.

Area seniors can look forward to a day filled with food, entertainment, bingo, door prizes, vendors and a cake walk.

Lunch will be catered.
