Football in springtime

Football fans pining for the Fall and start of a new football season, take heart.

Like a bolt from out of the blue, the Knoxville Lightning is there for area fans to get their pigskin fix.

The Lightning is a semi-pro football team that is based out of Knoxville and practices at Tommy Shumpert Park.

There is so much more to the team, though.

The team is not your average every day football team. They’re all women.

5th suspect in stabbing, shooting jailed

A fifth suspect in the stabbing and shooting assault of a man on Margrave Drive is now in custody.

Zakary Edward Perrine is charged with especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, criminal responsibility for attempted first-degree murder, criminal responsibility for especially aggravated robbery, criminal responsibility for especially aggravated kidnapping and criminal responsibility for aggravated assault.

PACIFICO OUT

After only a little more than a year on the job, Harriman Police Chief Derek Pacifico suddenly resigned this weekend.

“It has always been my goal to raise the Harriman Police Department to industry standards in professionalism and police work,” he wrote in a letter posted online Saturday.

“Although there is still much to do, it has come time for a change in leadership. As such, as of midnight Sunday the 22nd, I have resigned my position as Chief of Police.”

Kingston dominates against Meigs County

The Kingston Yellow Jackets faced Meigs in Tennis this past Thursday, winning both the girls and the boys matches 5-4 and 6-3 respectively.

Lady Tigers fast in win

The Rockwood Lady Tigers softball team traveled to Oakdale on Thursday, and then played host to the Lady Eagles on Friday on the softball diamond, and both results turned out to be favorable for the Lady Tigers in both contests.

The Tigers were able to cruise to the victory on Thursday as they picked up the 24-1 victory over Oakdale.

Kara Garrett pitched in the game on Thursday for Rockwood and went the distance in the contest only giving up 3 hits.

Kingston back in the swing of things

The Kingston Yellow Jackets put together a complete team win Friday evening with a 5-2 win against the Stone Memorial Panthers at Legion Field.

“This is probably the most complete game we’ve had,” Kingston Coach Bruce Robinette said. “We really cut down on mistakes and were aggressive and more fun to watch.”

The Panthers got on the board first in the second inning when Alex Sixkiller and Tanner Hurd crossed the plate.

Orange and White impressions

It was gameday again on the Hill. As a sea of orange shirts cascaded down Peyton Manning Pass, I was reminded once again of just how special Neyland Stadium is, especially in beautiful weather.

65,098 Vol faithful packed the lower bowl to watch Team 122 in the annual Orange & White Game. The attendence number is probably exaggerated, however it is still among the Top 5 for spring game attendance this year.

School plan to go on ballot?

Another Roane County commissioner is expressing support for a referendum on the Roane County Board of Education’s $68 million building plan. The latest is District 2 Commissioner Randy Ellis.

“There’s so much back and forth — and the people want to have a voice and vote on this,” he said Monday.

The County Commission is scheduled to discuss the school board’s proposal during a work session at Roane County High School on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Coalfield walks it off with Harriman

With first place in the district up for grabs, the Coalfield Lady Jackets and the Harriman Lady Devils finally got to play their makeup game at Coalfield Saturday.

It came down to the very last at-bat with a walk-off hit from Tori Malone to give Coalfield the 5-4.
