After a wild and woolly game between Coalfield and Oliver Springs in their last showdown at Coalfield’s Hightower Field, the rematch was really over before it started as the Bobcats sent the Yellow Jackets packing back with a resounding 10-0 triumph in the opening round of the District 4-A Tournament Friday afternoon under threatening skies at Arrowhead Park.
The District 3-A Softball Tournament started Friday with the Harriman Lady Blue Devils picking up a 10-0 victory over Rockwood in what an elimination game for both teams.
At the announcement of a new facility to deal with mercury at Oak Ridge, U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. called mercury contamination “one of the biggest problems we have from the ColdWar era” and said it must be a priority as cleanup resources become available.
Alexander’s remarks came at a press conference announcing plans for a water treatment facility at the head of the East Fork Poplar Creek.
The District 4 A/AA Tennis Tournament was held earlier this week at Stone Memorial High School, and although several players from Roane County won matches in individual play, none would advance to next week’s Region 2-AA Tournament.
