Company scrip tells story of county’s industry history

For some, a love of history turns into a hobby.
Tom Carson has done just that, collecting scrip and other monetary items, with a particular focus on Hamilton and Roane counties, where he and his wife Judy own property.
Scrip was company money typically paid to employees instead of real cash.
“They paid the employees with these. They were supposedly only good at company stores, but they were (sometimes) good elsewhere, too,” Tom Carson said.

Roane players compete in district tournament

The District 4 A/AA Tennis Tournament was held earlier this week at Stone Memorial High School, and although several players from Roane County won matches in individual play, none would advance to next week’s Region 2-AA Tournament.

Lady Waves, Devils still alive in 3-A tourney

The District 3-A Softball Tournament moved into its third round Wednesday at Tellico Plains with the offense being hard to come by for each of the four teams still alive.

Harriman eliminated Tellico Plains in the opening game Wednesday, 5-0. The Lady Devils won despite having only four hits in the game. 

Lady Jackets one win away from region

The Kingston Lady Jackets softball team was hoping that by Wednesday evening they would have locked down a berth in next week’s Region 2-AA Tournament.

Tigers rip Washburn in doubleheader

If the Rockwood Tigers were looking to build some momentum heading into this weeks’s District 3-A Tournament, they did so on Thursday by routing Washburn in a doubleheader. 

The Tigers took game one, 11-0, and followed that with a 16-0 victory in game two of the evening.

Jackets sweep Tigers in tennis

With the regular season coming to a close, the Kingston Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets tennis teams swept Rockwood on Thursday.

Kingston won all nine games in boys play while picking up a 7-2 victory in girls action.

Three honored with Silver Star Awards

Renaissance Terrace of Harriman recently honored three people during its inaugural Silver Star Awards Gala.

The honorees were Amber Jacks of Mid-East Community Action Agency and two caregivers, Houston Wallace and  Bonnie Stizler, both of whom were elected by their peers and voted on by their superiors.

The caregivers were honored for setting the bar for care and consistently delivering stellar performances.

The old saying goes “It’s a new season” when the postseason begins. 

Wadlington-Norris

Randy and Rita Wadlington of Harriman announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Brooke Nicole Wadlington, to Brian Jack Norris.

He is the son of Jack and Harriett Norris of Rockwood.

The ceremony will be at 3:30 p.m. May 18 in South Harriman Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church’s family life center.

All relatives and friends of the couple are invited to attend.
