Arts Commission reinstates ABC grant program

The Tennessee Arts Commission has reinstated its popular Arts Build Communities grant program.

The ABC grant category is designed to provide support for arts projects that broaden access to arts experiences, address community quality of life issues through the arts, and enhance the sustainability of asset-based cultural experiences.

E-Response assists in reducing overpayment of Unemployment Insurance

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development has an electronic separation process to help reduce overpayment of unemployment insurance.

State Information Data Exchange System (SIDES) E-Response is a website through which employers submit electronic responses to unemployment insurance information requests.

The voluntary system was introduced in April 2012, but currently only 13% of employers are taking advantage of the system.

Three honored with Silver Star Awards

Renaissance Terrace of Harriman recently honored three people during its inaugural Silver Star Awards Gala.

The honorees were Amber Jacks of Mid-East Community Action Agency and two caregivers, Houston Wallace and  Bonnie Stizler, both of whom were elected by their peers and voted on by their superiors.

The caregivers were honored for setting the bar for care and consistently delivering stellar performances.

Free canning class offered

Rocky Top General Store is known for its rustic and nostalgic pieces, and comments from customers about the Harriman business’ canning products has inspired a class on the classic Southern method of preserving food.

“We just had so many people coming in that wanted to learn how to can and don’t know how,” said Debbie Mee of Rocky Top General Store.

Mee said the free class will be June 8.

A University of Tennessee Extension agent will be providing the class, which will be informational.

Roane jobless rate up slightly in March

Roane County’s unemployment rate was up a bit for March, according to statistics released late last month by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The rate, at 8.1 percent, is 0.2 percent higher than in February. The county’s jobless rate was at 7.6 percent a year ago, state records indicate.

The most recent numbers indicate that 25,210 workers in Roane County’s 27,430 labor force were employed during the month.

Wadlington-Norris

Randy and Rita Wadlington of Harriman announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Brooke Nicole Wadlington, to Brian Jack Norris.

He is the son of Jack and Harriett Norris of Rockwood.

The ceremony will be at 3:30 p.m. May 18 in South Harriman Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church’s family life center.

All relatives and friends of the couple are invited to attend.

The beautiful iris blooming in our gardens with elegance is worthy of the goddess for whom it was named.

Tennessee’s state flower was one of the more popular of spring flowers in gardens of medieval Europe, and it is still one we greet with joy in our own spring gardens.

Some of us refer to these flowers as flags or, if we are French, fleur de lys.

Rutherford Co. Commandments issue revisted

It’s been almost 10 years since the Rutherford County, lost a very expensive lawsuit over the posting of the Ten Commandments in the county courthouse.
The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Commission, contending that the posting was an unconstitutional promotion of religion.  U.S. Judge Robert Echols agreed and ordered the Ten Commandments removed in 2004.  It will “stay down,” County Mayor Ernest Burgess said at the time, calling it “the end of the story.”

Lady Waves advance to region tourney, Harriman eliminated

The District 3-A Softball Tournament came to a close Thursday night at Tellico Plains.

Two Roane County teams, Harriman and Midway, met in the loser’s bracket elimination game. Midway lived to fight another day with a 6-3 win over Harriman. The victory secured Midway a berth in next week’s Region 2-A Tournament.

Lady Jackets come up just short of region

It’s hard to beat a good team three times in a season.

The Kingston Lady Jackets found out just how hard Thursday evening, as despite sweeping Stone Memorial in the regular season, the Lady Panthers ended Kingston’s season with a 2-1 victory in the District 4-AA Tournament at Alcoa.
