New foes highlight 2013 schedule

The 2013 football season is a little more than two months away and this season will feature some schedule changes for all five county high school teams.

Arrests: March 8-14, 2013

Ken Yager: No need to go far for relaxation

There is a state park within an hour’s drive of just about anywhere in Tennessee. 
Several of these state parks are located in the 12th Senatorial District, including Indian Mountain in Jellico, Cove Lake in Caryville, Frozen Head in Wartburg, Norris Dam in Lake City, Cumberland Trail in Caryville and Pickett in Jamestown, as well as the Alvin C. York Historic Park in Pall Mall. 
In fact, the 12th District may have more state parks located in it than any other.

Lawyer asks to quit defending dad in starving boy’s case

Matthew Dotson, the father accused of starving his son to death, may have to find a new defense attorney.
His current legal advocate, Knoxville attorney Joseph Lodato, filed a motion in Roane County Criminal Court to withdraw from the case “due to his (Dotson’s) failure to fulfill contractual obligations,” Lodato said in the motion to withdraw.
The motion has yet to be granted by a judge.
Dotson and his wife, Amanda, are charged with first-degree murder in the death of their 2-year-old son Clifford.

Special chair burns in downtown Harriman fire

A fire shut down Roane Street in Harriman for hours and damaged two buildings in the 500 block Monday afternoon.

Most of the damage was in Looking Good Hair Salon owned by Glenda Copeland, but also damaged was the former Edwards Shoe Store, which has been vacant for years.

“The fire appeared to be what we call a high fire, so it started between the roof and the office area below,” said Harriman Fire Chief Brad Goss.

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:08 p.m.

Hollis recipient of Rockwood 2000 scholarship for ’13

Rockwood High School graduate Emily Hollis is the recipient of the Rockwood 2000 Scholarship for 2013.

“Emily has very impressive and specific goals for her future,” said Sandi McIntosh of Rockwood 2000.

“She has been accepted to the University of Tennessee where she plans to get her undergraduate degree and then apply to medical school to get her doctorate in orthopedic sports medical.”

Beer permit? Would-be bar operator can’t even get beer board hearing

The Roane County Beer Board refused to hear Roma L. Christopher’s application for a beer permit on Tuesday.
“Because you all think I’m opening up for Grover Norton,” Christopher told the board.

Norton, owner of the Grill & Pub, had his beer permit revoked for a year on Feb. 12. Christopher planned to operate from the same location, 2224 Harriman Hwy., under the name 27/61 Grill-N-Pub.

According to her application, Norton still owns the property.
The meeting lasted about five minutes.
