Lies in letters should be caught
Rutherford Co. Commandments issue revisted

It’s been almost 10 years since the Rutherford County, lost a very expensive lawsuit over the posting of the Ten Commandments in the county courthouse.
The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Commission, contending that the posting was an unconstitutional promotion of religion.  U.S. Judge Robert Echols agreed and ordered the Ten Commandments removed in 2004.  It will “stay down,” County Mayor Ernest Burgess said at the time, calling it “the end of the story.”

Lady Waves, Devils still alive in 3-A tourney

The District 3-A Softball Tournament moved into its third round Wednesday at Tellico Plains with the offense being hard to come by for each of the four teams still alive.

Harriman eliminated Tellico Plains in the opening game Wednesday, 5-0. The Lady Devils won despite having only four hits in the game. 

Midway wins, Harriman loses in 3-A action

Following a one day rain delay, the District 3-A softball tournament got under way Tuesday at Tellico Plains.

The Midway Lady Green Waves played the first game of the session and picked up a 2-0 win over the host Lady Bears.

City manager choice today?

Kingston isn’t wasting any time on filling the job after longtime city manager Jim Pinkerton retired last month.
Three finalists will be in town today (Friday) for tours and interviews, and a council vote on them is set in the afternoon.
From nearly 40 people who applied, the final three are David Bolling, a former Oliver Springs town manager and current town administrator for Newscastle, Maine; Tracy Baker, assistant city administrator of Sevierville; and David Rutherford, McMinnville city manager.
A fourth finalist withdrew from the process.

New charge lodged against Leon Houston

A superseding indictment was filed against Leon Houston in U.S. District Court on Tuesday.
The superseding indictment replaces the one filed against Houston in January. 
In addition to the original charge of possessing firearms while being an unlawful user of a controlled substance, he’s now also charged with use of a telephone to threaten an individual.
Houston has been in custody at the Blount County Jail in Maryville since January. The alleged threat occurred on Feb. 10.

Daphanie Lyn-Marie Cofer

Daphanie Lyn-Marie Cofer was born Nov. 7 in Tennova, Knoxville.

She weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce, and was 19 inches long.

She is the daughter of Barry and Stephanie Cofer.

Grandparents are Steve and Deborah Ellison and Fonna Cofer. Great-grandmother is Shirley Plemons.

Daphanie has an older brother, Ayden Newton.

Fun, focus on college savings

Five bucks and some change will give Tennesseans access to some of the state’s best-known family-friendly attractions later this month.
Across the state, people can visit a minor league baseball game, a museum or zoo on May 29 for only $5.29 each. People can also register online to win prizes and perks that day.
It is all part of an effort to raise awareness about the Tennessee Treasury Department’s TNStars College Savings 529 Program, which offers families a low-cost way to save money for college expenses while receiving certain tax advantages.

Santek opening facility in Roane

The old CAST Transportation site on Farmer Road will soon be home to a maintenance facility for Santek Waste Services.
“We did sign a lease on that building,” Cheryl L. Dunson, executive vice president of marketing for Santek, said last week.
Santek is headquartered in Cleveland.
According to its website, the company manages 16 solid waste landfills, three transfer stations and four waste collection companies in a nine-state region that includes Tennessee.
The old CAST Transportation site includes a 20,000 square-foot warehouse.
