Rockwood kids listen to Lorax

Teachers Tim Ensminger and Jessica Alred said taking care of the environment is one of the main focuses of the science clubs at Rockwood Middle and Rockwood High School.
That was evident on a recent Saturday morning when the students spruced up the recycle container that sits between the schools and planted a tree at the high school. 
“We’re here to help the earth,” junior Matthew Stamey said, “anything we can do at school and in the community to help make it more green and efficient is a good thing.”

Rock slide closes lane of interstate

Traffic was again flowing steadily in both lanes of Interstate 40 on Tuesday after state road crews worked through Monday to clear debris from a rock slide in West Roane County.
The back-and-forth weather may have caused the rock slide on the westbound side of the interstate near mile marker 343.
“A good guess is that it is weather related,” Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Nagi said.

County won’t be adding 12 school resource officers

A wish list of 12 additional school resource officers doesn’t look like it will come true this year for Roane County Schools.
Commissioner Bobby Collier said the additional officers and other security enhancements were discussed by school and county officials at a joint meeting on May 2.
“We did not vote to do that,” Collier said, about requesting 12 additional resource officers.

Roane players compete in district tournament

The District 4 A/AA Tennis Tournament was held earlier this week at Stone Memorial High School, and although several players from Roane County won matches in individual play, none would advance to next week’s Region 2-AA Tournament.

Tigers reach District 3-A title game

After seeing Monday’s and Tuesday’s action in the District 3-A Baseball Tournament cancelled due to weather, the decision was made to do away with the traditional double elimination format and go to a single elimination format for the four teams left standing.

Smart kids, black belts

Don’t mess with success — especially when it involves smart teenagers with black belts.
The academic top three for Rockwood High School’s class of 2013 all have first-degree black belts in taekwondo. First-degree is the highest rank achievable.
Peyton Robinette, Seth Emmert and Michael Grigsby, in top academic order, worked hard to earn them at Kingston Martial Arts Center, formerly Tennessee Tae Kwon Do Judo Center.
Grigsby called his black belt “a symbol of perseverance, determination and endurance.”
Robinette agreed.
