Ex-firefighter accused in threat...

Keith Lynn Hephner Jr., a former volunteer firefighter who was indicted for arson, is accused of threatening to set fire to his sister’s car.
He faces two counts of domestic assault in the alleged incident, which occurred on May 12 at 1048 Dogtown Road.
According to a Roane County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Sarah Connin told police that family had gathered to celebrate Mother’s Day when Hephner got upset and started using foul language.

Meth trade grows: Record number...

Putting medicines containing pseudoephedrine behind the counter. Limiting how much you can buy. Electronic tracking. Requiring people to speak to a pharmacist and show ID before purchasing.

Those are some of the measures the state has put in place to fight meth production.

They haven’t worked, according to Tommy Farmer, director of the state’s meth task force.

“Business is booming,” he said. “Literally and figuratively.”

Robinette case goes to grand jury

The drunk driving case of Steven Robinette, a former candidate for Roane County property assessor, was bound over to the grand jury Monday.
Kingston police charged Robinette with DUI and violation of the implied consent law last November. Officer Jerry Singleton said Robinette performed poorly on sobriety tests and refused to take a Breathalyzer test.
With the case now bound over, Robinette could face a possible indictment by the Roane County grand jury. The grand jury is scheduled to meet on June 17.   

Midtown wreck driver cited

Trooper Gary Snow said James Britton, the driver who allegedly caused a chain-reaction crash in Midtown on May 3, was cited for failure to exercise due care. The wreck was at the intersection of Roane State Highway and Ruritan Road.

According to police reports, two SUVs were stopped at the traffic light when Britton’s pickup crashed into the back of a TrailBlazer.
Snow identified the SUV drivers as John F. Rinke and Andrea L. Lawson.

Santek opening facility in Roane

The old CAST Transportation site on Farmer Road will soon be home to a maintenance facility for Santek Waste Services.
“We did sign a lease on that building,” Cheryl L. Dunson, executive vice president of marketing for Santek, said last week.
Santek is headquartered in Cleveland.
According to its website, the company manages 16 solid waste landfills, three transfer stations and four waste collection companies in a nine-state region that includes Tennessee.
The old CAST Transportation site includes a 20,000 square-foot warehouse.

Baked goods are an old favorite making a comeback this year to Harriman Farmers Market.

Mary Beth Banner Crass, who sold baked goods at the market in 2008 when she owned Utopia Cafe in downtown Harriman, will have her baked pastries, muffins, pies and cinnamon rolls when the market opens for the season on June 1 at Harriman Riverfront Park.

County won’t be adding 12 school...

A wish list of 12 additional school resource officers doesn’t look like it will come true this year for Roane County Schools.
Commissioner Bobby Collier said the additional officers and other security enhancements were discussed by school and county officials at a joint meeting on May 2.
“We did not vote to do that,” Collier said, about requesting 12 additional resource officers.

Former Harriman newspaper...

Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate recently dedicated The Walter T. and Julia Pulliam Historic Newspaper Collection and unveiled a special exhibit featuring some of the most prized pieces of the collection.

An archives room at the college was also named in honor of Pulliam, retired Harriman newspaper publisher, and his wife, Julia.

Pulliam was publisher and editor of The Harriman Record and Today’s News. He is also author of “Harriman: The Town That Temperance Built.”

Rock slide closes lane of...

Traffic was again flowing steadily in both lanes of Interstate 40 on Tuesday after state road crews worked through Monday to clear debris from a rock slide in West Roane County.
The back-and-forth weather may have caused the rock slide on the westbound side of the interstate near mile marker 343.
“A good guess is that it is weather related,” Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Nagi said.
