An irony of timing twice has put U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning in the headlines at critical moments in gaining congressional approval of a federal shield law that would protect journalists and their confidential sources.
On Capitol Hill, there’s new-found  White House support and congressional action behind  proposals to for the first time provide legal means in federal courts for journalists to keep secret their confidential sources and unpublished information.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam on Monday announced the city of Oak Ridge is receiving $200,000 in Clean Tennessee Energy Grant funding to replace and retrofit existing fluorescent lighting fixtures to LED lighting in the Oak Ridge Municipal Building and the Oak Ridge Civic Center Complex. 

As our ship of state sails away from ill-advised foreign entanglements, her hull battered and holed, her crew war weary, bloodied and ill-paid, the captain scans the distant shore for safe harbor ­— a place to mend her wounds and bind up shattered sails.

Weddings have become anything-goes affairs these days. I guess that’s as it should be.

I attended a fine outdoor ceremony at the Chattanooga Nature Center recently. Guests wore everything from dresses and coats and ties to blue jeans, hiking sandals and untucked shirts.

And bug spray. Our hosts were thoughtful enough to provide plenty of DEET-infused repellants.
