Due to a clerical error at the circuit court clerk’s office, recent court records involving Berta Presley were wrong.

Original charges were entered at tampering with evidence, but Presley pleaded to an amended charge of obstruction.

The charge was subject to diversion and will be dismissed if Presley completes a one-year diversionary program.

Making a big move to the country

Cars pulled to the side of the road Thursday on Harriman Hwy. for an unusual sight. A house on the move made its way through Oliver Springs to its new location on Old Hen Valley Road. M&M House Movers moved the home three months ago from Oak Ridge, where the new Kroger Marketplace is being built, said Michael Mills of M&M House Movers. "It's been in Oliver Springs until now, when we sold it to a family," he added.

New foes highlight 2013 schedule

The 2013 football season is a little more than two months away and this season will feature some schedule changes for all five county high school teams.

“I’m just thrilled to be here and part of a great team,” he said Friday as he closed out his first week as the city’s chief administrator.
“It is going to be a good experience, and I’m certainly grateful for the opportunity,” Bolling added. “I know they had a lot of good applicants for the position.

Bombing gives Stocktons...

The Boston Marathon bombing has given Tara and Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton a greater appreciation of each other.
They shared that appreciation when detailing their harrowing experience to the Harriman Rotary Club last week.
Tara Stockton was running the prestigious Boston Marathon in April while her husband was  there for support.
Tara Stockton still remembers the creeping dread of not knowing where her husband was but realizing he was somewhere around the finish line.

No peace at final resting place

Several tombstones have been knocked over at McCarroll graveyard, an African American graveyard near Harriman Cemetery.

“We’re having some vandalism,” said Bronce Cleveland, one of the community members devastated by the destruction of the small graveyard that’s near Harriman Cemetery.

Slipping Airport Road closed

A popular shortcut between Rockwood into Cumberland County has been shut down.

Roane County Road Superintendent Dennis Ferguson announced the decision to shut down Airport Road immediately Wednesday because of concerns about the stability of the roadway.

“This road has dropped,” he said. “We’ve got some major cracking.”

He said his department was contacted Tuesday by a traveler who almost wrecked because of the shifting roadway.

Security system phone scam...

Joann Davis thinks scammers targeted her and a friend recently, claiming to be security company installers scheduling a time to put a system in.

Davis said both she and her friend received almost identical calls.
Both women hung up.

“I have no idea what is going on. I’ve got two of them here, and I just hung up,” Davis said. She told her friend to do the same.

“I think it is just a scam from somebody trying to get in the house or bring security system in and then you get a big bill for it,” she added.

Evans makes request for checks...

Rockwood Vice Mayor Peggy Evans regularly makes requests to see financial records of the city.
She recently butted heads with others, including Rockwood attorney Greg Leffew, over disagreement on a Freedom of Information Act records request.
“I have been trying now for two or three years to get some information about some checks, and I have been told I cannot have them,” Evans said at a recent meeting.
The records are public, Leffew agreed.

Potential pay raises may be out...

To get the 2013-14 county budget in order, Roane County Commission’s budget committee removed a 2-percent raise for county employees last week.   
“I hate to do that,” Steve Kelley said.
“I do, too,” added Jerry Goddard.
The motion passed unanimously.
“We’ve been trying to maintain staff through this recession,” County Executive Ron Woody said.
