Magic prepare for magical trip

When it comes to softball, not many places compare to Oklahoma City’s Hall of Fame Stadium.
Hall of Fame Stadium is the site of the NCAA Women’s College World Series, where the Tennessee Lady Vols recently finished second overall.
This weekend, however, eight girls from Roane County, with college aspirations of their own, will get the opportunity to play at Hall of Fame Stadium as part of the 2013 ASA Hall of Fame Tournament.

It is strawberry time. All the markets are displaying red, succulent, wonderfully scented strawberries. Most of us are making the most of this annual treat with everything from strawberry pies and flans to good, old-fashioned delectable strawberry shortcake.

Five awarded $500 scholarships...

Five recent high school graduates from Roane County will begin their freshman year at Roane State Community College with a $500 Tennessee Scholars scholarship.

They are Alisa Barger of Midway High School, Jadah Gallaher of Harriman High School, Tavin Napier of Rockwood High School, Allison Taylor of Roane County High School, and Kara Young of Oliver Springs High School.

Blaze blows out window of house

Harriman Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1121 Georgia St. Tuesday afternoon. “Upon arrival it had an extremely large amount of smoke showing,” said Fire Chief Brad Goss. “Finally, when the fire came through it had actually blown the window out of one side of the structure.”

Pastor becomes military chaplain...

The Rev. Jake Morrill took the oath last week that commissions him to serve as a chaplain in the Army Reserve.

Morrill took the oath on June 9 before the congregation he serves at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

The day was special for another reason: it was Morrill’s 10th anniversary of ordination.

He was ordained on June 9, 2003, in his home church, Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville.

In his new role, Morrill will hold the rank of Army Reserve captain.

Hankes new regional Red Cross CEO

Michelle Hankes has been named chief executive officer of the American Red Cross East Tennessee Region, which has oversight of the nonprofit’s operations in 36 counties, including Roane.

Her first day will be July 8, 2013.

Hankes, previously president and CEO of Blount County United Way, comes to the Red Cross after many years of nonprofit experience.  

She holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Iowa, and a certification in nonprofit management from Iowa State University.
