Registration jumpstart

Kingston’s Shannon Palko, left, and her father, Leonard Palko, recently attended Summer Orientation and Registration at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Students at SOAR met with academic advisers, registered for classes, toured the campus and residence halls, received information about student activities, housing and financial aid and heard detailed information about First-Year Initiative, an orientation for first-year students the week before classes.

Swafford receives Bernard-Greif...

Recent Rockwood High School graduate Natasha Y. Swafford is the 2013 recipient of the Bernard-Greif Scholarship.

This is the 40th anniversary of this scholarship being awarded to an outstanding student graduating from Rockwood High School.

The $1,000 one-year scholarship to Roane State Community College is renewable for a second year if the recipient stays at Roane State to earn an associate’s degree.

Swafford accepted the scholarship during Rockwood High School’s awards ceremony last month.

Harriman Happenings

Carolyn Clemmons, her friend and son spent last weekend in Asheville, N.C., visiting her sister, Virginia.
While there, they visited other family members and some friends.
The following ones who are celebrating their birthdays this June are friends who play bingo at Harriman Community Center every second and fourth Mondays: Peggy Gunter, Ernell Renfro, Geraldine Harmon, Tom Collins and Mrs. Woods.

Clean Energy grant awarded by...

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam on Monday announced the city of Oak Ridge is receiving $200,000 in Clean Tennessee Energy Grant funding to replace and retrofit existing fluorescent lighting fixtures to LED lighting in the Oak Ridge Municipal Building and the Oak Ridge Civic Center Complex. 

Volkswagen’s aim: Eco-friendly

Volkswagen’s new Southeastern Regional Distribution Center in Roane County is looking to do something that none of the car company’s other warehouses have done.    
“We are going for LEED certification,” said John Kutz, senior manager of the facility.
“It will be the only Volkswagen LEED certified warehouse in our entire network.”
LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Holocaust survivor to speak at...

Kingston Public Library and Roane Writers Group will present “A Hidden Child” on June 20 as part of the Thursdays at the Library program.

Sonja DuBois, who was born in the Netherlands and became an orphan at 22 months, will share her experiences during and after the Holocaust.

The free program will begin at 6 p.m. in the library at 1004 Bradford Way.

Grill & Pub may reopen under...

A Harriman woman wants to sell beer at 2224 Harriman Hwy., site of the Grill & Pub.

The Roane County Beer Board was scheduled to hear Roma L. Christopher’s application for a beer permit today.

Grill & Pub owner Grover Norton’s beer permit was revoked for a year on Feb. 12 after the county beer board decided the business was a magnet for trouble.

Christopher’s application was dated May 6. Her address was listed as 324 Barnett Circle, Harriman.

FAST Football Camp set for June 18-20

The 2013 FAST Football Camp for ages 6-13 will be held at Roane State Community College in Harriman, from June 18-20 from 9 a.m. until noon each day.
The camp is non contact and focuses on fundamentals. The camp will be ran by Oliver Springs head coach Wiley Brackett, Kingston head coach Brian Pankey and Rockwood head coach John Webb.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The first day and the cost is $60 pre-registered or $65 day of camp. Siblings receive a $5 discount.
