A student at Harriman Middle School found himself choking on a cupcake during dismissal time on Feb. 7. The way teachers Jessica Langley and Victoria Henley responded to the situation didn’t go unnoticed.
“Ms. Langley it was in her classroom, she was immediately the first one to see it,” Principal Leslie Smith said. “She began the Heimlich maneuver on him and then Dr. Henley swooped in to assist.”
Smith said all that happened within a minute.
“Due to their quick actions they saved him from being in greater harm,” Smith said. “I was super proud of them and how they handled that situation.”
Langley and Henley were each presented with the Lifesaving Award during the March 19 Roane County Board of Education meeting.
“Thank you,” Assistant Director of Schools Tony Clower told both as he presented them with the award.
The crowd also gave Langley and Henley a standing ovation.
“We’ve got some dang good employees,” Board Member Danny Wright said.
