  • Panthers stone Harriman, 19-0

    The Harriman Blue Devils opened fall camp with two strong scrimmage performances against Monterey and Sweetwater.

    The Blue Devils were hoping to make it a perfect three-for-three Tuesday evening and build confidence heading into their Aug. 28 season opener at Kingston, but Stone Memorial put a dent in those plans as the Panthers rolled to a 19-0 victory over Harriman.

  • Kingston shows improvement in...

    After struggling to move the ball during their first scrimmage at Tyner on Tuesday, the Kingston Yellow Jackets bounced back Friday with a much better showing during a four-way scrimmage at Webb School of Knoxville.

    At Tyner, the Jackets amassed just 125 yards of offense in 53 plays, but against Wartburg, Karns and Webb on Friday, Kingston rolled up a total of 309 total yards in 59 plays.

  • Tigers enjoy trip to Pigeon Forge

    Last Monday, the Rockwood Tigers scored on three of their four varsity possessions in rolling to a 21-0 victory over Meigs County in Rockwood's first fall scrimmage.

    Thursday evening, the Tigers took the field again and were even more impressive as they scored on all four varsity possessions in picking up a 24-0 victory in a scrimmage at Pigeon Forge.

    Kingston head coach Vic King knew going into fall practice that replacing all 11 offensive and 10 defensive starters from last season's playoff team would mean his Yellow Jackets would need some time to work out the kinks heading into their season opener against Harriman on Aug. 28.

    Harriman football head coach Travis Tapp says that his Blue Devils have a long way to go before they open the season on Aug. 28 at Kingston, but Tapp's squad took a positive step toward their season opener Friday evening with a 20-12 victory over Monterey in a scrimmage at Wallace-Black Field.

    The Oliver Springs Bobcats didn't win their first scrimmage of the fall at Campbell County Monday evening, but fourth year Bobcat head coach Wiley Brackett found plenty of positives to build on as his squad stood toe-to-toe with a Class 5A playoff team from 2008 in dropping a 14-7 decision.

    Another sign that football season is just around the corner was last week's release of Murphy Fair's 2009 Tennessee High School Football Preview. Every year the magazine previews all 16 districts in all three classifications in TSSAA's Division I as well as all the private schools in Division II.

    If this year's preview is correct then the Rockwood Tigers will have a great season as John Webb's squad is being picked by the District 3-A coaches as the team to beat this season.

  • Christopher named 2009 Female...

    The awards just keep rolling in for former Oliver Springs basketball star Kayla Christopher.

    Christopher, who will be a freshman at Chattanooga this fall, and Webb's Faith Dupree will be honored Thursday night by the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame as the 2009 High School Female Athletes of the Year at the Hall of Fame's 28th Annual Dinner and Induction Ceremony.

    “It's a great honor,” Christopher said. “To be one of only two girls receiving this award means a lot to me.”

    When most senior citizens travel to California it's to visit family or see Hollywood.

    For Wayne and Sydney Woodlee of Kingston and Charlie and Joyce Ingram of Rockwood, however, an August trip to San Francisco is more of a business trip as the quartet of Roane County seniors will be looking to bring home a gold medal in mixed tennis at the 2009 National Senior Olympic Games.
