  • Basler to catch for Roane State

College baseball coaches always think defense first when looking for catchers.
But when they find a catcher with defensive skills that can also hit, well they feel they've hit the jackpot and that was the case for Roane State head coach David Lane recently as he signed Kingston senior Derek Basler.
“Derek's got all the tools to be successful,” Lane said. “He's good behind the plate and he's a big stick from the left side. We're always looking for better talent and we think Derek is going to make us a better team.”
Basler was equally excited to playing for Coach Lane.

A knee injury has sidelined veteran pitcher Morgan Page, leaving Roane State with one primary pitcher, freshman Bridgit Cook. Page could return later in the season.

“I'm very happy to be getting to play,” Gaines said. “I like that Roane State is close to home and when I went there for my tryout everyone was very friendly.”
“They're getting not only a good softball player, but a good person,” Kingston head coach Ronnie Ladd added. “She's smart, hard-working and very talented. She'll be an asset for them. I'm very happy for her.”

When the Midway Middle School Lady Waves lost starting post Ragyn Hall in the Area 4 AA Tournament and then dropped a 60-23 decision to Lenoir City in the Area 4 AA title game, not many people expected Susan Woody’s squad to make a run in the East Tennessee Class AA Sectional Tournament last week at Pigeon Forge.
