  • Rockwood wins AA title

    The Rockwood AA All-Stars completed a perfect five-game run through the Dixie Youth subdistrict tournament with a 16-4 win over Caryville Tuesday night in the championship game at Spring City.

    Although Rockwood did have a couple of close games in the tournament, the Tigers put on a hitting display Tuesday to pick up the championship.

  • Kingston advances in A tournament

    The Kingston A All-Stars have advanced to the next round of Dixie Youth postseason play while Harriman has been eliminated.

    Kingston advanced with four impressive victories.

    The Jackets opened play with a 21-4 victory over Spring City on Friday.

    Saturday, the Jackets knocked off Harriman and Oak Ridge American by identical 23-8 finals then Kingston defeated Harriman Monday, 24-2, to advance to Tuesday's championship game against Oak Ridge American.

  • Neal to play for U.S. Soccer Team

    When Christina Neal was nine years old, she had the opportunity to meet  soccer legend Mia Hamm while Hamm was in Nashville playing for the United States Women's Soccer Team in a game against Canada.

    That meeting made a lasting impression on Neal who vowed that day to one day be like Hamm and represent her country on the international stage. Neal is now living out that dream as next month she will be playing for the United States International U19 Soccer Team in the 2009 Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden.

  • Dixie Youth tournaments begin...

    The race for community bragging right gets under way Friday afternoon with the opening of the 2009 Dixie Youth Tournaments.

    Two different age groups, A (5-6 year-old players) and AA (7-8 year-old players) will begin play Friday at Spring City and Rockwood while the AAA (9-10 year-old players) and Majors (11-12 year-old players) tournaments will begin later this summer.

    The A sub-district tournament starts Friday evening in Rockwood at 6 p.m. with a total of four games on the schedule.

  • 23 from Roane named all-district

    The 2009 softball season was a good one for Roane County's five teams as all five teams finished at or near the top of the district standings.

    Midway led the way again in 2009 as the Lady Waves captured the District 3-A title on their way to their fourth straight TSSAA Class A State Tournament. The Lady Waves were rewarded for their success as five players received postseason recognition from the coaches in the district by being named to the 2009 All-District 3-A Team.

  • 18 from Roane named all-district

    The 2009 high school baseball season was another good one for Roane County's five schools and those teams were rewarded with a total of 18 players and one coach being to various all-district teams.

    Oliver Springs senior Patrick Burnett received the biggest award for a player as the Bobcat pitcher/catcher was named the District 4-A Slugger of the Year by the coaches in District 4-A.

  • Burnett signs scholarship papers

    Some players can hit and some can pitch at the college level, but only a few can do both.

    Oliver Springs senior Patrick Burnett is one of those that can do both and now the Bobcat catcher/pitcher will be doing it a the next level as Burnett recently signed scholarship papers with the University of the Cumberlands.

    “I really can't describe it,” Burnett said. “It's a lot of stress off my shoulders now that I know where they're going.”

  • Dishman staying positive despite...

    Harriman junior Tyler Dishman has a strong belief that all things are possible through God.

    Now he has proof.

    On May 11, Dishman was on the mound pitching for the Blue Devils in the opening round of the Region 2-A Tournament when Wartburg's Shawn Langley smashed a hard line drive up the middle that hit Dishman just above his right eye. Dishman went down immediately and some at Harriman's Papermaker Field even thought Dishman was dead.

    Swimming is one of the best ways to beat the heat in the summer time and both the Rockwood and Kingston Community Center swimming pools offer a safe, fun and inexpensive way to swim this summer.

    Both pools offer public swim times in the afternoon as well as exercise classes and swimming lessons for the public.

    The Kingston Community Center pool is open seven days a week with open pool for the public on Monday through Friday from 1-4:30 p.m. Admission for public swim is $2.50.
