  • Youth disc golf club starting up...

    Looking for a new hobby?

    Roane County High School sophomore Nick Wilson is joining others to help encourage an enthusiasm for disc golf in hopes of starting a Roane County Youth Disc Golf Club.

    A kick off for any  youth 18 and younger interested in learning about the game will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Roane County Park shed 8.

    “What I was planning on doing is basically starting a club that hosts different tournaments amongst ourselves and different people,” Wilson said.

  • Lady Tigers edge Alcoa, 3-2

     The Rockwood Lady Tigers continued their impressive early season run Monday evening with a narrow 3-2 victory over Alcoa at Mike “Brillo” Miller Sports Complex in Rockwood.

  • Lady Jackets suffer first loss

     In a rather stunning turn of events, the Scott High Lady Highlanders shocked the Kingston Lady Jackets with a 2-0 win on Tuesday evening at Kingston. 

    For Kingston, Tuesday’s loss was the first of the season as the Lady Jackets are now 5-0-2 on the season. The Lady Jackets are 2-1 in district play.

    The 2013 season hits its fourth week and all five teams in Roane County will be in action on Friday the 13th. Whether that is good or bad luck remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, all five county teams need as many wins as possible to help build their postseason resume.

    Participation in high school sports increased for the 24th consecutive year in 2012-13 and passed the 7.7 million mark for the first time, according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

    Two fourth quarter touchdowns proved to be the difference Thursday night as the Cherokee Yellow Jackets ran their season record to 4-0 with a 20-6 victory at Rockwood (2-2).

    It wasn’t a perfect game for the Oliver Springs Bobcats Friday night at Oakdale, but it was mighty close as Wiley Brackett’s squad scored early and often in a 72-27 victory over the Eagles in a District 4-A contest.

    The win was a big bounce back following last week’s disappointing 30-12 loss against York Institute.

  • Tigers rally past Blue Devils,...


    The Rockwood Tigers ran their winning streak to five straight and 13 out of 14 over Harriman Friday night with a 32-14 victory at Wallace Black Field.  

    Friday’s victory wasn’t easy, however, as the Tigers trailed 14-6 late in the first half before scoring the final 26 points of the contest.

  • Kingston falls at Scott, 14-12


    All good things must come to an end, as the Kingston Yellow Jackets took one on the chin against the Scott High Highlanders, dropping a 14-12 decision in Huntsville Friday night.

    This was the first loss to Scott High for Kingston since 2003.
