    After a lackluster performance at Oneida in week zero, the Rockwood Tigers put it all together Friday night with a 25-6 victory over visiting Midway.

    "I thought we played together tonight," Tiger head coach John Webb said after the game. "We made four major mistakes in the first quarter, but we played well after that. I thought our execution was much better than last week."

  • Midway, Rockwood set to clash

    With Harriman and Kingston out of the way, Midway and Rockwood will take center stage Friday night as the Green Wave and Tigers will duke it out in a huge county showdown at Rockwood’s Civitan Field.

    Oliver Springs is also in action Friday night as the Bobcats will travel to Englewood to take on McMinn Central.

  • Youngsters gearing up for grid...

    It was a hot week one of action in the Tennessee Valley Football League last Saturday. Fortunately, all the players and coaches came through the day in good shape with no heat related symptoms reported.

    The only league game of the week saw Rockwood visiting Harriman. After dropping the cricket game, the Rams rallied to win the hopper and cutter contests.

    Kingston went on their longest road trip of the year and lost three of four games at Bledsoe County.

  • Eagles snap losing streak

    OAKDALE—After struggling through 22 straight losses, Oakdale ushered in the 2008 high school football season with an explosion against Jellico last Friday night on Hollis Eble Field.

    The Eagles (1-0), which had went winless the last two seasons, led from start to finish in a 29-7 victory over Jellico.

    “The monkey is off our back and the losing streak is over,” offered rookie Eagle head coach Randy Miller, who enjoyed his coaching debut.

  • David Brainerd defeats Sunbright...

    CHATTANOOGA—It was a cat fight at Washington Hills in Chattanooga last Friday night.

    The David Brainerd Christian Wildcats beat the Sunbright Tigers 26-16 to open up the 2008 high school football season.

    Last year, David Brainerd topped Sunbright 14-7 to spoil Johnny Harrison’s coaching debut.

    David Brainerd jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead with Brooks Thedford hitting Will Keebler for a 46-yard touchdown pass and Denzel Lowery added a nine-yard scoring run.

    The Oliver Springs and Coalfield rivalry over the years has been comparable to the Hatfields and the McCoys. This year’s middle school game was no exception as both teams battled tooth and nail for 32 minutes and when the dust settled, it was the Bobcats escaping from the bituminous mountain known as Coalfield with a 16-12 victory.

  • Poe paces Midway past Claiborne...

    For the second consecutive year, the Midway Green Waves opened football season with a resounding win over AAA Claiborne County.

    Midway opened up an 18-0 lead by the middle of the second quarter and led 26-6 at halftime. Two more touchdowns in the third quarter put the visiting Bulldogs away by a final score of 40-12.

    After a shaky preseason, Green Wave head coach Craig Moser was pleasantly surprised by the relatively easy win.

  • Tigers fall at Oneida; coach...

    Oneida’s Dr. M.E. Thompson field is one of the toughest venues in East Tennessee for visiting teams to play.

    Rockwood found out just how tough Friday night as the Tigers suffered a season-opening 28-14 loss at the hands of the Indians.

    “I thought we played pretty hard, but our execution was terrible at times,” Tiger head coach John Webb said following the loss. “When we had a chance to make plays we didn’t. We’ve got to do a much better job executing.”
