  • David Brainerd defeats Sunbright...

    CHATTANOOGA—It was a cat fight at Washington Hills in Chattanooga last Friday night.

    The David Brainerd Christian Wildcats beat the Sunbright Tigers 26-16 to open up the 2008 high school football season.

    Last year, David Brainerd topped Sunbright 14-7 to spoil Johnny Harrison’s coaching debut.

    David Brainerd jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead with Brooks Thedford hitting Will Keebler for a 46-yard touchdown pass and Denzel Lowery added a nine-yard scoring run.

  • OSMS escapes Coalfield with 16-...

    The Oliver Springs and Coalfield rivalry over the years has been comparable to the Hatfields and the McCoys. This year’s middle school game was no exception as both teams battled tooth and nail for 32 minutes and when the dust settled, it was the Bobcats escaping from the bituminous mountain known as Coalfield with a 16-12 victory.

  • Poe paces Midway past Claiborne...

    For the second consecutive year, the Midway Green Waves opened football season with a resounding win over AAA Claiborne County.

    Midway opened up an 18-0 lead by the middle of the second quarter and led 26-6 at halftime. Two more touchdowns in the third quarter put the visiting Bulldogs away by a final score of 40-12.

    After a shaky preseason, Green Wave head coach Craig Moser was pleasantly surprised by the relatively easy win.

  • Tigers fall at Oneida; coach...

    Oneida’s Dr. M.E. Thompson field is one of the toughest venues in East Tennessee for visiting teams to play.

    Rockwood found out just how tough Friday night as the Tigers suffered a season-opening 28-14 loss at the hands of the Indians.

    “I thought we played pretty hard, but our execution was terrible at times,” Tiger head coach John Webb said following the loss. “When we had a chance to make plays we didn’t. We’ve got to do a much better job executing.”

  • It's kickoff time in Roane...

    It’s officially here.

    The start of the 2008 high school season kicks off Friday with four of the five schools in Roane County hitting the field for the first time. Only Kingston will be idle as Yellow Jacket fans will have to wait a week before Vic King’s squad hits the field.

    Harriman, Rockwood, Midway and Oliver Springs, however, are all hoping to have a win under their belt by the time the Jackets hit the field.

  • Wartburg battles Panthers

    CUMBERLAND GAP - Wartburg got in their final pre-season action at Cumberland Gap High School last Friday in jamboree play. The Bulldogs faced the Class AA Cumberland Gap Panthers in 30 minutes of varsity action and then the two teams went 10 minutes to end the night with junior varsity work.

    Cumberland Gap earned a 24-14 win in varsity action, while the 'Dogs came away with an impressive 16-0 victory in JV play.

    High school football fans in attendance at 2008 Roane County Football Jamboree got a chance to see four of Roane County’s five teams on Friday as well as Oakdale and Coalfield, but what they didn’t see was a lot of offense as only Harriman and Oakdale found the end zone.
