    With only 23 days until the start of the regular season, Roane County football coaches are all in similar positions this time of year as Kingston’s Vic King, Rockwood’s John Webb, Midway’s Craig Moser, Harriman’s Travis Tapp and Oliver Springs’ Wiley Brackett are all looking to fill holes left by graduation losses from a year ago.

  • Christopher weighing future

    The game of basketball has always been easy for Oliver Springs’ Kayla Christopher.

    However, deciding where to play college hoops has been anything but easy for the Lady ’Cat star.

    Entering her senior season, Christopher is ranked among the top players in the state — if not the nation — and that talent has a number of Division I schools courting for her services.

  • Strickland done at Oakdale

    Oakdale will have a new football coach when the 2008 high school football season kicks off next month. Chip Strickland resigned back on July 9 after only one season as head coach.

    Strickland went 0-10 in his lone season at Oakdale, but cited a once in a lifetime opportunity and lack of support from the administration, as reasons for his departure.

    Strickland was hired as the athletic director at Knoxville Christian School. He is working with former OHS head coach Willie Childers, who serves as principal at KCS.

  • Lady Bulldogs focus on offense

    Wartburg got offensive this summer working on their game for the 2008-09 basketball season.

    Bulldog head coach Joe Layne said his team focused on a few new wrinkles on offense during their off-season work.

    “We had a good summer and we got a lot better in the areas we wanted to. We’re doing some things differently offensively and our halfcourt offense is really coming on,” explained Layne.

    Diamond Softball Academy owner Darrell Williams was extremely proud when the Ten-nessee Sports Writers Association released its 2008 All-State Softball Team.

    Four of his students — Monterey’s Taylor Adkins, Midway’s Hannah Colyer, Coalfield’s Lindsey Fadnek and Oliver Springs’ Kim Hall — were all named to the Class A team.

  • Harriman comes up short at state...

    Only one team will leave Lookout Mountain happy this week and unfortunately for Harriman fans, the Blue Devils won't be that team as the Harriman Major All-Stars dropped their first two games at the Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament.

    Harriman opened play Monday against defending state champion Goodlettsville and dropped a 10-0 decision. After a day off on Tuesday, the Blue Devils had their chances against Bolivar, but in the end they couldn't come up with enough hits and dropped a 9-3 decision.

  • Kingston AAA sputters

    For three and one-half innings Monday evening it appeared as if the Kingston AAA All-Stars were on their way to an opening round victory in the Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament at Signal Mountain.
