  • Harriman comes up short at state...

    Only one team will leave Lookout Mountain happy this week and unfortunately for Harriman fans, the Blue Devils won't be that team as the Harriman Major All-Stars dropped their first two games at the Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament.

    Harriman opened play Monday against defending state champion Goodlettsville and dropped a 10-0 decision. After a day off on Tuesday, the Blue Devils had their chances against Bolivar, but in the end they couldn't come up with enough hits and dropped a 9-3 decision.

    For three and one-half innings Monday evening it appeared as if the Kingston AAA All-Stars were on their way to an opening round victory in the Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament at Signal Mountain.

    After winning the District 8 AA title with relative ease, the Kingston AA All-Stars received a major challenge Monday afternoon in the opening round of the Dixie Youth AA State Tournament as the Jackets needed a two-out RBI single from Tyler Thurman to drive in Austin Key with the winning run in an exciting 14-13 victory over Hickman County.

    Three teams from Roane County will take their first step toward a possible Dixie Youth state championship Monday evening as the Kingston AA All-Stars, Kingston AAA All-Stars and Harriman Majors All-Stars will all play in Dixie Youth State Tournament opening round games.

    The Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) released their 2008 Class A All-State Baseball and Softball teams earlier this week and Roane County is well represented as a total of four players received all-state honors.

The long shadows that the late Jim May and Garry Kreis cast allowed Henry an opportunity to do his coaching without a lot of fanfare. Now, the 42-year old steps into the spotlight as he takes over the reigns as Coalfield head football coach.

    Jason Davis led his Lady Bulldogs to a state tournament in his rookie season.

    His second season will be a bit tougher with the loss of six seniors that scored 2,454 career points. He took a big step in developing his team this summer with team camp trips to Shelbyville and Tennessee Tech last month.

    The trip to Shelbyville was a stern test for an inexperienced Wartburg team.
