    Marty Maxfield is getting plenty acquainted with his new team. Sunbright played 15 basketball games in a matter of five days in Lebanon and McCreary County, Ky., during high school team camp. They were scheduled to play eight games at Stone Memorial in Crossville this week.

  • Roane women compete in national...

    Nine area women recently represented the Roane County Women's Bowling Association in the USBC Women's Nationals Bowling Tournament running April 10-July 6, in Detroit, MI.

    For more than 90 years women have crisscrossed the Nation each spring to bowl in the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships. In its 90-year history, the event has grown to become the largest participatory sporting event for women. The tournament attracts participants of all skill levels ranging from the average weekly league bowler to the game's all-time greats.

    Allen Davis likes what he has seen out of his Lady Tiger basketball team this summer. He sees a team that is much improved and is building depth for the upcoming season.

    “They all have stepped up at camp. I’ve been pleased over the summer so far and all the girls are playing well,” said Davis.

  • Coalfield plays at Maryville...

    For a team that struggled through a one-win season, competing is what Coalfield is looking to do heading into the 2008-09 basketball season.

    Ted McKinney’s team took part in a four-day team camp at Maryville College and he came away pleased with the results.

    “We’ve done really well. We’ve played good basketball. We’ve improved a whole lot from last year. Our kids are actually moving and playing a lot better defense,”

  • TSSAA takes up classification...

    Public vs. Private, Rural vs. Urban, and high gas prices.

    Those are the three big items that are fueling the conversation this week as the TSSAA meets in Franklin to come up with a possible new classification plan beginning in 2009 for its 375 member schools.

    If changes do occur, football will be the sport most affected by the changes.

  • Roane State announces basketball...

    Roane State Men’s Basketball program will offer boys basketball camps for ages 5-8 on June 16-20 from 9 a.m. until noon ($55) and for ages 9-13 June 23-27 from 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. ($105).

    “I and my staff are committed to teaching proper skills while maintaining a positive and en-thusiastic atmosphere,” points out Raider head coach and camp director Randy Nesbit.

    Swimming is one of the best ways to beat the heat in the summer time and both the Rockwood and Kingston Community Center swimming pools offer a safe, fun and inexpensive way to swim this summer.

    Both pools offer public swim times in the afternoon as well as exercise classes and swimming lessons for the public.

    The Kingston Community Center pool is open seven days a week with open pool for the public on Monday through Friday from 1-4:30 p.m. Admission for public swim is $2.50.

  • Branstetter to next level

    Madison Branstetter has been perfect in the classroom during her high school days. That perfection along with her talents on the hardwood has allowed her to get an opportunity to play basketball at the collegiate level.

    Branstetter recently signed a letter-of-intent to play for the University of the Cumberlands, but early on it didn’t appear that she would end up playing basketball for the college located in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
