After not competing in last week’s sub-district tournament, the Harriman A All-Stars finally got their chance to play and the results have been mixed as the Blue Devils have one win in their first three round robin games in the Dixie Youth District 8 A Tournament.

Harriman played two games Saturday. The first was a 17-11 loss to Madisonville, but the second was a 20-11 victory over Spring City.

Harriman’s third game came on Monday and the result was a tough 14-13 extra-inning loss to Sweetwater.

The Oak Ridge All-Stars gave Kingston all they wanted and then some in the Dixie Youth AA sub-district tournament, but in the end the Jackets survived and picked up the tournament championship with a winner-take-all 15-12 victory in extra innings.

Wednesday’s title game was actually the second nail-biter of the day played between the two teams and third in three days.

A coaching era is over at Coalfield. Garry Kreis has hung up the whistle after nearly 30 years of roaming the sidelines for the Yellow Jackets.

Kreis helped put Coalfield football on the map during the last 21 seasons as head coach. He finished with 165 wins, 18 trips to the playoffs, half-a-dozen district/region championships (1990, 91, 94, 95, 2005, 06), and a dozen Morgan County titles to leave his mark on the Tennessee high school football scene. He also served as an assistant at Coalfield from 1979-1986.

The 2008 Coalfield basketball camp hit the road this year. With construction and work being done at Coalfield School, camp director Carmen Hines had to change the game plan and was able to move the camp to Petros-Joyner School.

"We had to move it out to P.J., so we were dealing with some smaller circumstances as far as room and stuff. I'm thankful to all of them down at Petros-Joyner. Mr. Treece and Miss Julie really helped me out a lot so I could pull it off and have camp there," said Hines.

There was more than one way to pick up a victory Friday night in the opening round of the Dixie Youth sub-district AA tournament at Rockwood.

For Kingston, it was all about defense as the Jackets allowed just eight hits in six innings of play in handing the host Tigers a 7-1 set-back.

For Harriman, it was all about the offense as the Blue Devils scored 20 runs in the first three innings of play and that was more than enough to hand Caryville a 20-10 loss.
