  • Top seeds advance

    The top seeds held their ground in the first day of the double elimination round of the District 3-A softball tournament at Harriman Monday evening.

    No. 2 seed Harriman cruised past Rockwood 9-2 in the first game then top seed Midway pounded Greenback 22-1 in the second game.

    The wins by the top seeded teams set up the first showdown Tuesday when Midway played Harriman in the winner’s bracket round. Rockwood played Greenback Tuesday in an elimination game.

  • CAK ends Kingston's season

    The 2008 season came to an end for the Kingston Yellow Jackets Monday evening as Bruce Robinette’s squad suffered an 11-1 loss to Christian Academy of Knoxville (CAK) in a loser’s bracket game of the District 4-AA Tournament being played at CAK.

    Kingston had defeated the Warriors 4-2 on Saturday, but CAK put together a solid performance Monday in advancing to the tournament’s final four.

  • Moriarity signs with Cumberland...

    Size, speed and a nose for the football, those attributes have landed Rockwood’s Simon Moriarty a college football scholarship with Cumberland University in Lebanon.

    “I’m pretty excited,” Moriarty said after signing scholarship papers on Tuesday. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do. Ever since I was little I’ve wanted to play college football for somebody. Now I’m getting a college education while doing something I enjoy.”

  • Three is a lucky number for lady...

    The Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats captured their third straight District 4-A championship with a hard fought 4-0 victory over Coalfield.

    What made the victory so tough was the pitching match-up as Oliver Springs had their hands full with Lady Jacket eighth grade phenom Lyndsey Fadnek. Fadnek had the Lady ‘Cats handcuffed for 4 2/3 innings Thursday, but the Lady ‘Cats finally caught up with Fadnek’s heat and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one more in the sixth.

  • Lady Raiders have banner year

    Roane State Community College’s softball team ended the regular season with its best conference record in school history.

    The Lady Raiders went 8-12 in TJCCAA/NJCAA Region VII and 18-32 overall. Roane State plays Saturday in the TJCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Tournament in Columbia. The team’s opponent has yet to be determined.

    Roane State has improved its overall win total — four, eight, 12 and now 18 — in each of its four seasons under head coach Sue Niemi.

  • Cofer headed to Tennessee...

    A lot of players have talent while others have a great work ethic, but it’s not often that players combine the two.

    Rockwood third baseman Amber Cofer is a player that is blessed with talent and an even better work ethic. Now Cofer has parlayed that combination into an athletic scholarship with Tennessee Wesleyan College.

    “I’m real excited,” Cofer said at Monday’s signing ceremony. “I’ve always dreamed of playing softball in college.”

  • Rockwood goes 2-for-3 in scramble

    Rockwood spent the weekend playing three Class AA teams at the 2008 Loudon Scramble.

    Things went well for the Tigers in their first two games as they knocked off Carter, 5-4, and Alcoa, 4-1, but things didn’t go well against the host school as the Redskins handed the Tigers a 10-1 setback.

  • 'Dogs sweep Oakdale

    Terry Coker’s baseball team secured a bye in next week’s District 4-A Tournament with a sweep of Oakdale last Monday and Tuesday to earn the #2 spot.

    Wartburg (15-6, 8-2 in District 4-A) got a 9-2 victory over the Eagles last Monday on the road.

    Trailing 1-0 after two innings, the Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the third to take the lead for good. They would later scored three runs in each the fifth and seventh innings to put the game away and pull out a 9-2 win over the Eagles.

  • Coalfield captures '08...

    When Jason Wilson starred in baseball at Coalfield back in the early 1990’s, his teams always won district championships. He is starting to get that tradition back going again. After winning the 2007 District 4-A Tournament in his first season as Coalfield skipper, he has led the Jackets to the 2008 District 4-A regular season crown.
