  • Lady Cats own Lady Dogs

    Twenty-four hours after rolling to an 11-0 victory at home over Wartburg, the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats travelled to Wartburg and cruised to an 11-1 victory in five innings.

    Kim Hall tossed a two-hitter past the Lady Bulldogs on Monday and she was even better on Tuesday as she allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 12 on the day.

    Offensively, the Lady ‘Cats put the game away quickly with nine runs in the first two innings of play.

    Wartburg’s Ashley Settles was named to the 2008 Tennessee Sports Writers Association Class A All-State basketball team following her outstanding senior season.

    Settles becomes the third Lady Bulldog to be named to the TSWA All-State Team along with former Wartburg standouts Amanda Susak (1997) and Jacinda Susak (2002).

    Johnny Harrison is building a versatile coaching resume at Sunbright.

    He took over the Tiger football program last summer and less than a year later he finds himself coaching the baseball team after the recent resignation of Terry Clark, who finished 1-3.

    Harrison believes he has some good talent to work with on the diamond.

    Now the Rockwood senior will have at least four more years of memories as she has signed scholarship papers to play for Maryville College.

    The state's first baseball rankings of the year were released Tuesday, and the news was good for the Rockwood Tigers as Joey Cofer's squad are sitting atop the Class A standings.

    The Tigers celebrated their No. 1 ranking on Wednesday by ripping Greenback in a double header, 14-3 and 13-3.

    Offense was the name of the game for the Tigers as Rockwood pounded out 29 hits in 10 trips to the plate. Eleven of those hits went for extra bases as the Tigers banged out six doubles, one triple and four home runs on the evening.

    The past two seasons have seen the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats accomplish a lot on the softball diamond. The Lady 'Cats have won two district titles and have advanced to the TSSAA's Class A sectionals.

    However, despite all their success, the Lady 'Cats could not beat Anderson County. In fact, in Matt Headden's 11 years of coaching the Lady 'Cats have never beaten the Lady Mavericks.

    That all changed Wednesday evening, however, as Oliver Springs cruised to an easy 8-1 victory over the Lady Mavericks.

  • Midway slips at end of spring...

    The Midway Green Waves ended their spring break week with a 14-5 loss at Meigs County.

    The Green Waves remain in non-district play this week with games against Sequoyah Tuesday and Thursday then a visit to Sunbright Friday.

    The double header against Oneida scheduled for Saturday has been changed. Midway will visit Oneida instead of hosting them this weekend.

  • Coalfield sweeps Wartburg

    In what was billed as the top attraction in District 4-A baseball, Coalfield took a pivotal two-game series last Monday and Tuesday against Morgan County-rival Wartburg to give the Jackets a big leg up in the race for the District 4-A Title.

    “It is good to get started out 2-0 in the district and hopefully we can build on that,” offered Coalfield head coach Jason Wilson.

    “We’ve got our destiny in our own hands. We just got to hit the baseball better.”
