  • New faces lead Morgan teams

    Three new coaches took over Morgan County sports programs this spring when high school baseball and softball started.

    At Wartburg, Amy Stafford takes over for Paul Brown as new softball coach. She is assisted by her husband Larry Stafford, who is excited about coaching the Lady Bulldogs.

    “We’re excited to be coaching here at Wartburg. We have a lot of young girls and they are trying very hard,” said Stafford.

  • Rockwood fares well in weekend...

  • Devils top Midway 5-0

    >Midway and Harriman hooked up Thursday afternoon for the second and final game in the season series for 2008.

    Harriman won the first game Tuesday 12-2 at Midway on the strength of four home runs. With all the homers on Tuesday no one really expected a pitchers duel Thursday, but it did happen as Harriman pulled out a 5-0 win with all five runs coming in the fifth and sixth innings.

    Harriman improved to 4-1 with the win and 2-0 in District 3-A while Midway dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the district.

  • Lady Devils dash past...

    The Harriman Lady Blue Devils are off to a great start as David Currier’s squad ran their season mark to 6-0 recently with a 7-1 victory over Westmoreland.

    The game was limited to five innings because Harriman was hosting both Coalfield and Westmoreland, but the amount of time didn’t seem to matter as the Lady Devils were in control from the outset.

    Lady Devil pitcher Kayla Turner had another strong outing as she tossed a one-hitter with two walks to go along with four strikeouts.

  • Devils roll to 12-2 win

    The Harriman Blue Devils won their opening district game Tuesday night when they cruised by Midway 12-2 at Midway.

    Harriman improved to 3-1 with the win while Midway drops to 1-2.

    Midway jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Blue Devils with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Harriman used four home runs in the game to score the next 12 runs to pick up the win.

  • Harriman coach inducted into...

    There’s not a lot Richard Pickell hasn’t accomplished on the basketball court.

    As a player, Pickell was a starter on Lenoir City’s 1958 state championship team. He was later enshrined into the Lenoir City Hall of Fame for that accomplishment.

    As a coach, Pickell amassed 561 wins in 30 years as a head coach. Twenty-four of those years came at Harriman where he’s most remembered for leading the 1995 Blue Devils to the TSSAA Class AA State Championship.

    Armed with bats of aluminum and hot pitching, the Midway Lady Green Waves capsized the Wartburg Central Lady Bulldogs with a convincing 15-2 victory Monday afternoon in softball action.

  • Bunch leads Morgan basketball...

    Wartburg junior Caleb Bunch finished the 2007-08 high school basketball season with a county-best 21.2 points a game and 74 three-pointers to lead the boys.

    Oakdale junior Korin Pease led the girls with an 11.9 point average and 42 treys. See the Morgan County News, Page 2-B, for complete statistics.

  • Wartburg fends off Harriman

    Wartburg outlasted Harriman 5-4 in 10 innings last Tuesday to open up the 2008 high school baseball season.

    In what many consider two of the top teams in Region 2-A, the game lived up to the hype as the Bulldogs (1-0) found a way to pull out the win at home.

    The first two innings were scoreless until the top of the third when Harriman's Cody Pierce gave the Devils a 1-0 lead, but Wartburg responded right back with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the inning.

  • Lady Jackets win pitchers'...

    Fans attending Monday’s softball game between Kingston and Coalfield were treated to a good old-fashioned pitching duel between a pair of youngsters, Kingston freshman Jessica Korb and Coalfield eighth-grader Lindsey Fadnek.

    The duo combined to strikeout 25 hitters on the night while giving up just seven hits, but in the end it would be the Lady Jackets from Kingston defending their home turf with a 4-1 victory.
