  • Roane teams eliminated from...

    The 2009 Dixie Youth Baseball season came to a close for Roane County teams over the weekend as Harriman and Kingston were both eliminated from the Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament being played at Southwest Point.

    Harriman's two losses in the double elimination tournament came as the Devils dropped a 9-2 decision at the hands of Perry County on Friday then Harriman suffered a 4-1 setback at the hands of Red Bank on Saturday.

    College coaches at any level are always looking to sign local talent.

    Roane State women's basketball head coach Monica Boles is no different and she signed two players from Roane State's back yard this week as the Harriman duo of Shantel Boyd and Kiersten Douglass both signed with the Raiderettes.

    "I'm excited," Boyd said after signing. "I've wanted to play college basketball all my life and now I'm getting the chance to do it close to home."

  • OS competes in passing league

    The Oliver Springs Bobcats have spent much of the past few seasons taking on bigger schools while trying to rebuild their program.

    This week the Bobcats have again been taking on bigger schools, but it's not been in region play, it's been part of the 2009 Air Attack Passing League at Webb School of Knoxville.

    On Tuesday, Wiley Brackett's Bobcats played a pair of games on Faust Field but they didn't have much luck as they were downed by the host Spartans, 38-15, and by Halls, 44-0.

    A strong postseason run came to an end Sunday afternoon for the Kingston A All-Stars as the Junior Jackets closed their season with a strong third place finish in the Dixie Youth A State Tournament played at Goodlettsville.

    Midway’s Alex Coffman has always wanted to play college softball and now the former Lady Wave star is getting her chance as last week Coffman signed scholarship papers with Cleveland State Community College.

    “I’m really excited,” Coffman said. “I’m kind of surprised by this.”

  • Tigers headed to state

    With their postseason life on the line, the Rockwood Tigers scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday night to knock off Tellico Plains, 9-8, in the Dixie Youth District 8 AAA Tournament and secure a berth in the Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament.

    Rockwood was actually down to their last strike when Bryson Bayless scored on a wild pitch that tied the game at 8-8. Austin Lowe then provided the biggest hit of his young life when he singled home Dalton Monroe with the game-winning run.

  • Jackets headed to state tourney

    The Kingston A All-Stars are making it look easy.

    After cruising to five easy victories in subdistrict play, the 5-6 year-old Jackets cruised again in the Dixie Youth District 8 Tournament, winning four games by a minimum of 12 runs.

    Kingston opened the round robin tournament with a 19-4 victory over Tellico Plains and they followed that with a 19-7 victory over Oak Ridge. Next was a 21-6 victory against Sweetwater and their final victory came Monday evening with a 25-8 shelling of Madisonville.

  • Midway rolls to title

    Winning a state title is supposed to be a challenge, but that was the case over the weekend at Coalfield for the Midway Green Wave Major T-Ball team as they blasted four opponents on their way to the AABC State Championship.

    Midway opened tournament play with a 13-1 win over Coalfield, next was a 24-6 victory over Oliver Springs then the Waves beat Coalfield in the semifinals, 15-3. Midway was at their best in the championship game as they needed only three innings to defeat Knoxville Heat, 15-0.

  • Nall releases high school...

    Earl Nall's 2009 Tennessee High School Football Ratings have been released and fans of Roane County's five teams should be hoping that Nall's computer doesn't have a virus as the preseason ratings would have all five county teams with a record of 5-5 or better this season.

    Nall's ratings normally aren't released until the start of the season, but that changed in 2009 because of TSSAA's reclassification and new playoff system.

  • Rockwood wins AA title

    The Rockwood AA All-Stars completed a perfect five-game run through the Dixie Youth subdistrict tournament with a 16-4 win over Caryville Tuesday night in the championship game at Spring City.

    Although Rockwood did have a couple of close games in the tournament, the Tigers put on a hitting display Tuesday to pick up the championship.
