  • Harriman, Midway, Rockwood fall...

    The opening round of the TSSAA Class A baseball and softball tournaments didn’t go well for three teams from Roane County.

    In baseball, the Rockwood Tigers dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 decision against Jackson Christian in extra innings while Harriman was on the losing end of an 11-2 decision against Richland.

    Softball wasn’t any better as Friendship Christian knocked off Midway, 10-0.

  • UPDATE: Fischer takes long road...

    They say it’s a long road to Murfressboro for the TSSAA state championships.

    Kingston’s Murielle Fischer can attest to that.

    Last Tuesday, the Lady Jacket junior Fischer secured a spot in the TSSAA Class A/AA state girls singles tennis tournament, but playing tennis was the easiest part of Fischer’s journey because last year at this time Fischer was play-ing tennis in Switzerland.

    Friday, May 16, 2008, will go down as a great day in the history of Roane County athletics as not one, not two, but three teams from Roane County wrapped up berths in next week's TSSAA State Tournament in Murfreesboro.

  • Midway captures 2-A title

    When it comes to Class A softball in East Tennessee, the Midway Lady Green Waves are the team to beat.

    The Lady Waves (23-3) proved that again Wednesday evening as they downed Coalfield 3-0 in the Region 2-A championship game that was played at Midway.

    Wednesday’s victory marked Midway’s third straight Region 2-A championship and now the Lady Waves will be gunning for their third straight and fourth trip in the last five years to the TSSAA Class A State Tournament.

  • Midway tops Oliver Springs, 7-1

    The Midway Lady Green Waves passed round one of the Region 2-A Tournament with a 7-1 win over county rival Oliver Springs Monday evening at Midway.

    The win will give Midway another home game Wednesday when they host Coalfield at 5 p.m. for the region championship. Coalfield beat Rockwood 4-3 to move into the title game.

    COALFIELD — Wartburg went from underdogs to district champs in just a little over 24 hours. Faced against Oliver Springs in an elimination game last Thursday evening in rainy, sloppy playing conditions, the Bulldogs ended the season for the Bobcats in a 10-5 win. Wartburg then handed top-seed Coalfield a pair of losses on Friday to capture the program’s first-ever district championship in baseball.

  • Lady Jackets sting O.S. for 4-A...

    COALFIELD — The youthful Lady Jacket softball team grew up quite a bit last week in capturing the 2008 District 4-A softball championship.

    With no seniors on the roster and led by an 8th grade pitching battery, Coalfield (15-8) knocked off regular season District Champion Oliver Springs twice in three days to earn the district title on their home field.

  • Expected rain forces early...

    Due to expected rain showers, the Region 2-A championship baseball game between Rockwood and Harriman will be played this evening (Tuesday, May 13) at 7 p.m. in Rockwood. The game was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday night.
