Bobcats open season with split

The Oliver Springs Bobcats and Lady ‘Cats opened their season at Tellico Plains Tuesday night and the results were mixed for the purple and gold.

In the girls game, the Lady ‘Cats picked up a 58-53 victory, but may have lost star point guard Katie Harvey in the process as Harvey injured her shoulder in the second period and did not return.

In the boys game, a short-handed Bobcat squad battled hard, but fell in the end, 71-60.

Girls Game

In a match-up of district tournament champions, the District 4-A Lady ‘Cats knocked off the Lady Bears, 58-53.

Things didn’t start out well for the Lady ‘Cats as Tellico Plains raced out to a 19-9 lead after eight minutes of play. Jessi Parson led the Lady Bears with eight points in the opening frame while Harvey scored six for Oliver Springs.

The Lady ‘Cats’ defense improved in the second period as they outscored the Lady Bears 15-10 in the period to make the score 29-24 at halftime.

Oliver Springs’ strong play continued in the third period as Katie Fitch buried a pair of three-pointers. Sarah Davis added five points in the frame as Oliver Springs led 43-40 with eight minutes left to play.

Things remained close in the final period, but the Lady ‘Cats hit enough free throws down the stretch to pick up the 58-53 victory.

Davis led Oliver Springs on the night with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Fitch and Alix Giles were next in line with nine points. Fitch scored all of her points from beyond the three-point arc.

Parson led Tellico Plains with 22 points.

Boys Game

The one-two punch of Tellico Plains guards Eric Croft and Preston Russell proved more than Oliver Springs could handle. Croft and Russell combined for 44 points in leading the Bears to a 71-60 victory.

Croft and Russell started early as they combined for 12 first period points in leading the Bears to a 14-11 lead after eight minutes of play. Michael Taylor and Cary Gann scored five points each for the Bobcats in the opening period.

The second quarter was high scoring as the Bears used a 22-17 advantage to take a 36-28 lead at halftime.

Russel led the Bears with 10 points in the period while Taylor, Matt Henley and Brady Sweet scored four each for the Bobcats.

The third quarter would see Tellico Plains’ lead grow to 11 points at 53-42. Cary Gann had a big quarter for the Bobcats as he scored nine points.

Oliver Springs had their best scoring quarter in the final period with 18 points, but they were unable to make a run as the Bears held on for the win.

Gann and Sweet led Oliver Springs on the night with 14 points.
