Fire broke out at Kingston United Methodist Church Saturday at approximately 7:00 p.m.

No one was in the building when Pastor John C. Anderson noticed the church was on fire while he was mowing the lawn.

Lt. Gary Nelson of the Kingston Police Department noted that the rear left corner and auditorium had received the most damage.

Hordes of passers-by surrounded the area around the church, as members of Kingston, Midtown, Harriman, East Roane County and Oak Ridge fire departments worked dilligently to contain the fire.

"The way I look at it, the building isn't the church, the people are the church," Anderson said at the scene. "I'm just thankful right now that no one was injured or killed."

Services tomorrow will be held on the lawn in front of the church at 10:30.
