On a perfect Friday night for softball, the Midway Lady Waves traveled across the district for a showdown of rivals with the Coalfield Lady Jackets, losing 13-1.

Midway tried repeatedly, but could not get on track.

Coalfield applied the pressure from the first inning through the fourth while putting up seven runs in the second inning.

The Lady Waves mustered a run in the third when freshman Macie Young crossed home plate due to an error in the field.

Midway’s freshman pitcher Lauren Bornhoeft had a solid start but had some tough breaks that didn’t go her way.

Coalfield’s junior pitcher Anna Smith struck out two while allowing her defense to record the other 10 outs.

Midway Coach Joey Nickell said, “It’s very early in the season for Midway softball (3-4).”

“I’m loving this team’s overall potential, yet understanding there’s a long way to go in order to meet that potential.”

Given his team’s relative youth, Nickell’s comment make perfect sense. Nickell plainly states his optimism regarding the team’s potential, while showing the necessary caution that any coach would.

The Midway Lady Green Waves will face Coalfield on tonight at 6pm at Midway for a rematch of Fridays game.

Thursday Midway will go to Wartburg Central and Friday will travel to Stone Memorial.
