The Oliver Springs Middle School Bobcats took care of business against the Oakdale Eagles by a 42-8 margin Thursday night at Oakdale’s Hollis Eble Field.

“We just outmanned Oakdale physically tonight,” Oliver Springs head coach Larry Green said after the game. “Give credit to Oakdale though, they played hard and kept fighting and never showed any signs of quitting out there.”

Oliver Springs scored on their first offensive play from scrimmage when Brandon Buck found Brandon Taylor for a 67-yard touchdown reception.  The two-point conversion was good to make the score 8-0 with 7:42 left in the opening quarter.

The Bobcats only took two plays to cover 29 yards en route to scoring on their next drive on a 17-yard run by Markus Miller. The two-point try fell short, making the score 14-0 with 5:08 left in the opening quarter.

The next scoring drive for the 'Cats traversed four plays and 68 yards when Buck found Shelby Morgan for the 10-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion was good, making the score 22-0 with 3:03 left in the first quarter.

The score at the half would stay that way, with Oliver Springs leading 22-0.

In the third quarter, the 'Cats got on the board again following a beautiful 48-yard punt return by Derrick Tinker to give Oliver Springs the ball on the Oakdale 12 yard line. On the next play, Miller barrelled through the Oakdale line to make the score 30-0 following the two-point conversion with six minutes left in the third quarter.

The Bobcats scored once again in the third quarter on a six-play, 27-yard drive when Jacob Grace scored on a one-yard touchdown plunge. The point try was short, making the score 36-0 with 2:23 left in the third quarter.

Despite trailing 36-0 in the fourth quarter, Oakdale had perhaps the play of the night when Logan Cox went right and reversed direction to his left, going untouched into the end zone for a 40-yard touchdown jaunt. The two-point play was good, making the score 36-8 with 2:25 left in the game.

Taylor, however, would return the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown.

The two-point play was no good, making the final score 42-8.

The Bobcats won through the air, 136-(-3), but lost on the ground to the Eagles, 139-85.

The Bobcats were led on offense through the air by Buck (6-6, 136 yards, 2 TDs) and on the ground by Brandon Sharp (9-38). The leading receiver was Taylor (2-106) while Casey Wilson (4 tackles) and Lane Evans (1 FR) had standout games on defense.

Oakdale was led on the ground by Logan Cox (15-123-1 TD).

“We need to work on containment on the defensive ends." said Coach Green. "We were missing our starting right guard and Tyler Stombaugh played a heck of a game in his place. I'm glad our younger kids stepped up.”

Next up for the Bobcats is a big district showdown with the Sunbright Tigers.

“Sunbright has size on both lines, they have a big physical running back in Skyler Bunch, and it's gonna take our best week of practice all year and our best game all year to beat them,” Green said.
