Pick Up Stix offering something different

Some businessmen might view an empty building next door as a deterrent.

Eddie Lee sees it as an opportunity to give Roane County diners something new and different.

“What have we got around here that’s like it?” he said about Pick Up Stix Habachi Express, the Japanese-style restaurant he’s preparing to open in the former Shack’s Restaurant on Rockwood’s North Gateway Avenue.

Cleanup is under way of the building that neighbors the flagship of Lee’s Big E’s convenience stores.

And opening day is imminent — Lee said last week he’s awaiting delivery and installation of a freezer, and the restaurant should open soon afterward.

Pick Up Stix will offer Habachi-style food with choices such as steak, scallops, chicken and salmon.

There are no plans for sushi to be on the menu, but look for offerings such as egg rolls and desserts.

“It’s going to pretty much be self-serve,” Lee said. “You’ll come in, place your order, and we’ll cook your food fresh. It’s not going to be sitting in a warmer.”

Lunch and dinner will be served seven days a week, with both dine-in and carry-out available.

The restaurant will have seating available for 70, but those on the run will have the option of calling in their order and picking it up at a drive-through window for customer convenience.

Lee said he plans to employ about five to eight people at the new restaurant.

Pick Up Stix Habachi Express will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
