The Roane State Raiders and Raideretts tipped off the home portion of the schedule Tuesday night and the results were good for the home teams as they picked up a sweep over visiting Wallace State.

The Raiderettes took the floor first and overcame a 9-point deficit in the final 13:08 of play to cruise to a 91-68 victory over the Lady Lions.

The margin of victory wasn’t as big for Randy Nesbit’s squad, but the W is all the same as the Raiders picked up a 77-72 win.

The Raiders and Raiderettes return to action Saturday with a pair of games at Walters State in Morristown.

Women’s Game

The one-two punch of Tasha Phillips and Jill Herman proved more than the Lady Lions could handle Tuesday.

Phillips scorched the nets for 38 points Tuesday to go along with 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists and 3 steals. Herman wasn’t far behind as she pumped in 26 points to go along with 9 assists.

Although Herman and Phillips were hot for most of the night, the Raiderettes did get off to a slow start as Wallace State jumped out to a 14-5 lead less than four minutes into the contest.

That’s when Raiderette head coach Monica Boles called time out and gave her team and earful. Roane State responded with a 12-2 run highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Herman.

The Raiderettes and Lady Lions traded the lead back and forth throughout the remainder of the half until Roane State took a 35-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Phillips led Roane State with 16 points in the first half while Herman added 13.

Like was the case in the first half, the Raiderettes started slow in the second half also.

The Lady Lions opened the second half with a 21-11 run and with 13:08 left in the game, Wallace State held a 55-46 lead.

That lead didn’t last, however, as by the 9:22 mark of the second stanza, the Raiderettes had pulled even at 60-60.

Once pulling even, the Raiderettes never looked back as they used a 12-2 run to take a 72-62 lead and then a game-ending 15-2 run put the game away.

Kayla Kimes also had a solid night for the Raiderettes as she dished out 9 assists.

Roane State (91) Phillips 38, Herman 26, Kimes 2, Gilmore 4, Hickson 7, Chism 2, Franklin 4, Delaney 4, Spence 4.

Men’s Game

In what was physical contest from the start, the Roane State Raiders outlasted the Lions to run their season record to 2-1.

Roane State opened the game with an 8-2 run and never trailed in the first 20 minutes of play as the Raiders held a 38-30 lead at intermission.

The second half, however, would turn into a dog fight.

The Lions would chip away at the Raiders lead until Quinton Jones buried a 3-pointer with 7:40 left to play to give Wallace State their first lead of the night at 57-56.

The lead traded hands for the next five minutes of play, but Roane State would put together a late run to pull out the victory.

Trailing 68-67, Roane State’s Jerrod Allen scored from inside then Quint Clinkscales put back a miss to give the Raiders a 71-68 lead with 53 seconds left.

The Raiders would take a 74-72 lead into the final 15 seconds, but Wallace State had the ball with a chance to tie or win the game on their last possession. Yavario Smith, however, had another idea as his steal and old-fashioned 3-point play with 5.1 seconds left sealed the deal for the Raiders.

Smith led Roane State on the night with 21 points while Jonathan Maybank (19) and Allen (14) also scored in double figures for the Raiders.

 Roane State (77) Smith 21, Maybank 19, Clinkscales 8, Mixer 1, Kalpic 6, Gadsen-Gilliard 3, Allen 14, Pettway 5.
