Rockwood opens season

Despite the fact it was raining cats and dogs outside, the points came raining down on the Sunbright Lady Tigers as the Rockwood Lady Tigers notched a 58-34 win Tuesday evening.

Rockwood, playing their first game of the season, used a 16-4 run in the opening period before Sunbright scored the last three points of the period to give Rockwood a 16-7 lead at the end of the opening period.

Sunbright narrowed the deficit to 28-20 going into the locker room. 

Rockwood had a 10-4 tilt to start the third period before Sunbright scored the last four points of the period to make the score 38-28 at the end of the third period. 

In the final stanza, it was all Rockwood as they used a 20-6 surge to take the 58-34 win.

Rockwood had a 31-29 edge in boards but had a decisive 17-10 tally in team steals.

Jade Napier (13 points) and Reanna Henderson (13 points) were the leading scorers for Rockwood along with Allison Breazeale (11 points, 5 boards) and SaVannah Grant (6 points) having significant contributions to the victory. 

Shaley Grant (5 boards) also played well in the win.

Sarah Sexton (16 points, 11 boards) and Hannah McWhorter (8 points, 5boards) led Sunbright in scoring. 

Amber Kennedy (6 steals) and Somer Stephens (6 boards) also played well in the loss.

Sunbright may have had to hold on for dear life in the final seconds, but they managed to hold off the Rockwood Tigers in a 47-45 heart-wrencher that went down to the wire. 

Sunbright started the game trailing 4-2, but used a 9-4 tilt to take an 11-8 lead at the end of the first period. 

Sunbright used a 9-2 run at one point in the second period to get out to a 20-10 lead, but Rockwood closed the deficit to 24-17 at halftime. 

Sunbright then used a 14-6 run through most of the third period before Rockwood hit a late three-pointer to make the score 38-26 going into the final stanza. 

Rockwood had an 8-2 run at one stretch and got as close as two points from the lead, but a final desperation shot was no good, ending the game at 47-45 in favor of the Sunbright Tigers. 

Rockwood had a 33-18 edge in rebounds and a 12-9 edge in team steals, but Sunbright's 5-2 three-point edge was what catapulted them to the victory. 

Sunbright was led in scoring by Tyler Langley (15 points) and Kyle Gunter (13 points). Timmy Turner (7 points) and Dave Henes (6 points, 5 boards) also had key contributions in the Tiger victory. 

Rockwood was led on offense by Cleveland Davidson (13 points), Brendan Kirkland (10 points, 8 boards), and Harold Huffman (9 points). 

Josh Boles (7 boards) also played well in the loss.
