    The story of the Roane County recluse Felix  “Bush” Breazeale, who famously held his own funeral years before he died, is being made into a movie starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray.

        In all her years at Lou's CafÈ, Lou Dixon never forgot her customers.

        On Tuesday, her customers and friends made sure Lou knew she would never be forgotten as well.

        Hundreds of mourners gathered at Schubert's Funeral Home of Sunbright Tuesday night to pay their last respects to the Sunbright icon that brought smiles and cheeseburgers to the community for a remarkable 47 years.

    Of all his travels, there was still one place that Charles Cunningham wanted to go.

    That is why the World War II veteran applied to be part of a group of fellow veterans that travelled by air for a trip to Washington D.C. to see, among other things, the National World War II Memorial.

    On Oct. 11, he was part of the third flight from McGhee Tyson Airport, part of a program by Honor Air Knoxville, which hopes to take as many World War II veterans as it can to see the memorial.

    A unique student activity is part of Bowers Elementary School in Harriman.

    Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students make up a color guard.

    “I guess this is the fourth year,” said Jerry Steele, a veteran who is in charge of teaching the drill team.

    One reason Steele teaches the selected students in the program is to instill a sense of patriotism.

    Pondside, on a clear summer evening in East Roane County, a lone frog warms up his banjo vocal chords as the sun goes down.

    At a renovated schoolhouse across the road comes a faint reply — but this one includes guitars, mandolin and bass.

    It’s Tuesday night at the Bradbury Community Center at 3343 Buttermilk Road and the place is hopping with Bluegrass players and those who like to hear them play.

  • In its 7th year, walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Roane County.

    Teams of Roane County residents will gather at Roane State Community College on June 20 at 6 p.m. for an overnight relay against cancer. Relay For Life is a family-oriented team event where participants walk relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams can include coworkers, club members, family and friends who have gathered donations prior to the event.
