    FRIDAY, SEPT. 14
    • Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Kingston, will have a two-day fall/winter children’s consignment sale. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The church is at 405 Old Johnston Valley Road.

    • Dogwood Baptist Church, Kingston, will have a singing at 7 p.m. featuring Chapel Voices and The Melodys. The church is on Dogwood Valley Road.

  • Tennessee Tech applauds Griffin, Kelley

    Two area Tennessee Technological University students have recently received prestigious honors.

    The students honored are Robert Griffin of Ten Mile and Jacob Kelley of Rockwood.

    Griffin is among 200 students nationwide to be named a Tau Beta Pi Scholar.

    He is the first Tennessee Tech student to receive the honor, which includes a scholarship to help fund his education.

  • University of Tennessee at Knoxville dean's list: spring 2012

    Fifty-nine University of Tennessee at Knoxville students from Roane County were named to the dean’s list for spring semester.

    To qualify for the dean’s list, a UT undergraduate student must earn a term grade-point average of 3.80-4.0 to attain summa cum laude status.

    Students with a GPA of 3.65-3.79 earn magna cum laude honors, and those with a GPA of 3.5-3.64 are named cum laude.

    Students must complete at least 12 hours, not counting work taken on a Satisfactory/No Credit basis, to be eligible.

  • Field trips: Approved August 2012

    Upcoming out-of-state and overnight field trips approved by the Roane County Board of Education in August:
    Oct. 13-17 — About 50 Roane County High students to tour New York City.

    March 23-31, 2013 — About 20 Rockwood High students to tour Europe and Mediterranean coast.

  • Tech Center in challenge to aid Teachers Supply Closet

    Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman’s Honor Society has challenged classes at the Harriman center to see who can generate the most support for this year’s Teachers Supply Closet.

    The students from each class will donate items and canvass the community to solicit support through monetary donations or donated school supplies.

    The winning class will celebrate with a pizza party provided by the Honor Society, which is an organization of students from all of the center’s full-time programs.

  • Excel students see science lesson

    Dr. Sylvia Mende of Tennessee Eye Care in Midtown was the guest speaker for the last Excel after-school science class at Midway Elementary School.

    The class of third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students, taught by Vivian Harris, were shown causes of common eye injures, eye replacements and the parts of the eye and their jobs.

    Afterward, the students received hands-on experience dissecting cow eyes and identifying their parts.

    Parents were invited to attend the class.

  • Roane teachers asked to enter Extreme Classroom Makeover

    For the fifth year, Oak Ridge Associated Universities will award an Extreme Classroom Makeover to an East Tennessee school teacher.

    The award provides $25,000 worth of the latest educational technologies, training and/or support.

    Teachers interested in competing must file their intent to apply no later than Sept. 7.

    This year, in an effort to increase eligibility, qualifying grades have been changed to include grades 3-10 public school math and science teachers and within a 50-mile radius of Oak Ridge.

  • Roane State extends hours to prepare for fall classes

    Roane State Community College campuses will offer extended business hours to help students get ready for the start of fall classes.

    Extended hours will be offered on the following schedule (all times Eastern) at the Roane County and Oak Ridge campuses:

    • Saturday, Aug. 18 — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    • Monday, Aug. 20-Thursday, Aug. 23 — 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

    • Monday, Aug. 27-Thursday, Aug. 30 — 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

  • School Lunch Menu: Aug. 20-24

    MONDAY — Hot dog or chili dog on bun, chicken quesadilla or entrée salad with buttered corn, fresh fruit selection, chilled fruit cup and milk.

    TUESDAY — Chicken sliders, ham or turkey wrap or entrée salad with variety spuds, lettuce/tomato/pickle, fresh fruit selection, chilled fruit cup and milk.
