  • The Garden Gate: Rio Grande great for grapefruit

    Fall is a busy time in the garden, where leaf raking will soon become a recurring task.

    The scent of burning leaves, once a fall trademark, is now forbidden to city dwellers. It can still sometimes be a country experience.

    Cool nights and warm days have provided us with burgeoning bright colors in the trees, and soon the hollies and evergreens will remind us that the joyous holiday season is not so far in the future.

  • OES annual bean supper Sept. 28

    Kingston 405 Order of the Eastern Star will have its annual bean supper on Sept. 28.

    The supper will be from 4 to 7 p.m. in Union Lodge 38 on Spring Street.

    Beans, cornbread, sides dessert and beverage will be available for $6.

    Fried apple and peach pies will also be available for purchase.

  • Immigration issues to be lunch topic

    R. Andrew Free of Ozment Law will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 1 Lunch with the League program.

    The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge program will start at noon in the social hall of Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

    There is no cost to attend, and reservations are not needed.

    Box lunches will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis for $8, or those attending may bring a lunch.

    Coffee and tea are provided.
