Today's Opinions

  • A View From Lick Skillet: Trump is right protecting steel and aluminum

Gentle reader, over the years that we have been writing this column, there have been a few times when we have felt a dearth of topics from the preceding week’s news events out of which to select a subject upon which to expound.

This past week has not been one of those. No, indeed we have been inundated, flooded, overcome, overwhelmed, well-nigh buried with potential topics since we last commented on national affairs, our last two having focused on local or historical matters primarily.

  • Going with the Flo: We are one nation under God under his divine order

    By FLO CHARLES

Leaving the FISA memos chaos in Washington for now to our All-Powerful God, Who can reveal anything covered up, let me clarify: Never was it implied or meant that we should obey man rather than God.

We obey God-appointed authorities because God instructs us to in His Word. No one is higher than God Almighty!

We are a nation under God — under His divine order. We answer to Him for our decisions and for those of our country, and so do our leaders.

  • GLIMPSES from a Teacher Historian: Constitution rife with controversy

    By MARK BANKER

Guns and Russian meddling in our elections now hold center stage in the ever-changing American news cycle. But roots of these current controversies run deep in our Republic. Indeed, rhetoric from all sides of our ongoing debates draw from a common source — the United States Constitution.

  • THOSE were the DAYS: Sometimes you get a second chance

    By ADELE ROBERTS

I’m giving you my heart. Please take care of it for now you have two – and I have none.

I knew from the time I was in third grade that I wanted to be a teacher. There was never a doubt in my mind.

In 1961, I graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., and began my teaching career.

I loved being a teacher. I can remember thinking at the end of the day, “I can’t believe I’m being paid for doing this.” However, at that time $4,000 a year was good pay!

  • Thanks for support of Father-Daughter dance this year

The Harriman Rotary Club would like to thank the following people and businesses for sponsoring our fifth annual Father Daughter Dance:

State Sen. Ken Yager, state Rep. Kent Calfee, Griffin Insurance, Duncan Family Auto Group, Eddie’s Body Shop, Glenda Johnson, Visionary Horizons-Chris Ahler, Edward Jones-Deric A. Runge, Express Employment Professionals and Christina Branham-Coldwell Banker Jim Henry and Associates.

We would also like to recognize Chris Whaley and Diane Cox of Roane State Community College for the use of the student lounge.

  • Check out the facts, or write a letter of opinion?

I’ve seen several comments in your “letters to the editor” recently that suggest writers check out the facts before commenting. I believe your paper calls for “Opinions” from guests. My letters are just that. My personal opinion.

While I do not wish to deliberately lie or mislead people, I do not bother to look up facts. There was once a time when you could depend on the news media to tell you the facts. The news anchors were honorable, ethical people you could depend on.

  • From the EDITOR’S Desk: Let’s make Kingston great again

Imagine a downtown Kingston where folks travel from near and far to visit historic places and stop at coffee shops and ice cream stores to refresh themselves.

On nice days these visitors could walk by the lake or maybe even rent a sailboat, canoe or kayak for an afternoon cruise before dining in a fine downtown restaurant.

It’s still a dream, but business owners, elected officials and volunteers have been working to make it reality. These visionaries intend to breathe new life into the underdeveloped downtown Kingston.

  • GOING with the FLO: God protects those following Him

In last week’s column I mentioned that God promises to “dispossess nations greater and mightier than we are” if we obey and He will “set us high above all the nations of the earth.”
