  • Bowers students part of honor choir

    Elizabeth Rueff and Larissa Langley said they like singing in groups.

    That should put the two Bowers Elementary School students right in their comfort zone when they visit Chattanooga this spring.

    The Harriman students are part of the Tennessee Treble Honor Choir, which is made up of 130 to 150 fifth- and sixth-graders from around the state.

  • Midway students eligible for Volunteer Energy scholarship

    Volunteer Energy Cooperative wants to reward Midway High School students who have used their time and talents to benefit their community.

    Graduating Midway seniors are among those in Volunteer Energy’s service area who are eligible for the Lillard-Shadow scholarship program.

    The program rewards academic and community service achievements by awarding four $2,000 scholarships to students who will graduate from high schools in Volunteer Energy’s service area this spring.

  • School calendars for next 2 years unveiled

    The Roane County Board of Education had another lengthy school calendar discussion last week.

    Longtime Board Member Mike “Brillo” Miller, who thinks the county starts school too early, once again found himself on the losing end of the debate.

    The board approved the 2012-13 calendar by an 8-2 vote.

    Rob Jago joined Miller in voting against it.

    “You know how I am about the calendar,” Miller said. “I just don't think we ought to start until after Labor Day.”

    College Goal Tennessee offers students and parents completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, expert assistance from hundreds of professionals in the financial aid, admissions, secondary, and higher education communities.

  • Get shots up to date, or no school this fall

    Stricter Tennessee laws regarding immunization requirements will have a detrimental effect on students entering Roane County Schools this fall.

    Students without proper immunizations will be prohibited from starting the school year in August, said Patricia Wells, school health coordinator of Roane County Schools.

    All Pre-K, kindergarten and present sixth-graders advancing to seventh grade this fall must receive proper immunizations before entering school.

  • ET band clinics feature several RCHS students

    Several students at Roane County High School, Kingston, were chosen to participate in the East Tennessee Band & Orchestra All East Honors Bands earlier this month.

    During tryouts at Bearden High School in Knoxville, each student was graded by a panel of East Tennessee band directors on a prepared solo, scales and the ability to sight read.

    Students chosen will be part of four bands representing all areas of East Tennessee.

    The bands will rehearse for two days and present a concert in Gatlinburg on Feb. 4.

  • Good Midway Middle students get special visits from an Angel

    Angel Thurman, an East Tennessee aspiring singer/songwriter, recently performed at Midway Middle School as an end-of-the-quarter incentive.

    As part of the School-wide Positive Behavior Support plan, students who have no office referrals and are caught up on all school work at the end of each grading period are rewarded with a school-wide incentive for following the three school rules: Be Ready, Be Responsible, Be Respectful.
