Another Senior Night is in the books for the Kingston Yellow Jackets.Kingston was able to secure the victory at Fort Southwest Point against the Wartburg Bulldogs, 13-3, Thursday night.
The Bulldogs struck first with Evan Crouch scoring a run in the top of the first inning.
An attempted steal and a strike out helped to end the frame, bringing the Jackets to the plate in the bottom of the inning.
A big hit by James Lane drove in a runner.
Blake Hester followed with a two-run double to put the Jackets up, 3-1.
Things quieted a bit for the next inning and half, but the bottom of the third saw Kingston explode with a six-run outburst (Petersen-2, Herrell-2, Lawson-1, and Lane-1).
Crouch attempted to spark Wartburg in the sixth. He brought in Bryar Henry with a hit.
It didn’t slow Kingston, however, as the Jackets scored four more runs in response to bring their total to 13 runs.
When following up with Coach Aaron Fielden about Peterson’s leadership for the past four years, the coach had this to say, “To have a leader like Zack Petersen around the program for the last 4 years has been a blessing.
“He is one of the hardest workers I have ever coached and he continually goes above and beyond for the program to make this team better. It has been my pleasure to coach Zack, and I am a better person myself for being around him.
“I would also like to thank Kitts Dumpster Service and Bojangles of Midtown for donating all of the food and drinks for last nights senior night celebration!”
Ethan Shannon was the losing pitcher. He gave up seven hits and nine runs, four of which were earned.
Landon Riter was the winning hurler. He went four and two-thirds inning, striking out two and walked one.
“The game was a great team win,” Fielden said. “Everyone did their job last night, and I feel like we are building a-lot of momentum at the right time that we can carry into next week against Meigs County and into the district tournament.
“This team is special, not only because it is my first one as a head coach, but because of what they have accomplished and can accomplish the rest of the year.”
Crouch, Shannon and Aiden Vespie drove in one run each.
Vespie went two-for-three at the plate.
Lane drove in four runs for Kingston and went two-for-three.
“We as a coaching staff have high expectations for the rest of this year, and if we can keep this momentum rolling, I fully expect we can make a deep run into the tournament,” said Fielden. “I’m just proud of all the guys and the hard work that they have put in throughout the year. They have trusted me and the other coaches and have bought in to what we are teaching them. Keep an eye out on this team. We’re going to be tough to handle moving forward.”
