Often some programs and schools have, over the years, built up a certain mystique and it carries over to games.
That is the case with Oak Ridge High School, but the Midway Lady Waves obviously didn’t get the memo, because for the second time this season, they won big. This time Friday, Midway beat Oak Ridge on the road to the tune of 19-9.
Roane State signee Kali Kile proved to be the straw that stirs the drink in the contest as she led the Lady Waves with runs batted in for the contest.
These RBIs came as a direct result of a good day at the plate for the senior.
Kile scored two in the sixth inning off a triple, drew a walk in the first frame to score a run and singled home another one in the second.
Early in the season, Midway and Oak Ridge had squared off with the Lady Waves getting the better of the match-up.
This time, the Lady Wildcats came prepared and didn’t waste time in putting runs on the board.
Oak Ridge scored four runs in the top of the first, putting pressure on Midway.
The pressure, though, didn’t materialize as the Lady Waves were more than ready to counter.
Midway tied the game thanks to Kile’s walk and a single by Reese Collier along with some wild pitches and an error in the outfield by the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Waves were far from finished.
In the second, Midway tacked five more runs on five hits.
The highlight of the frame came courtesy of Collier who drove in two runs thanks to a double.
Oak Ridge wasn’t going to go away, though.
The Lady Wildcats scored three in the third inning and two more in the top of the fifth to knot the score at nine.
A recurring theme to the game was the Lady Waves’ ability to respond any time they found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard.
Midway scored three more to retake the lead after Chloe Jarnigan and Jamie Cardin each doubled.
Collier brought home a runner on a single to make the score 12-9 in the Lady Waves’ favor.
Adding more in the way of insurance, Midway tacked on seven runs in the sixth inning to make sure the victory was decisive.
Jarnigan, Kile, Collier, Kiersten Ruffner and Sara Beth Nickell all contributed hits and runs in the inning to give the Lady Waves the piece of mind only a sizable late lead can give.
Kile was the winning pitcher. In only two and two-thirds innings of work, she allowed seven runs on seven hits. Kile also fanned four batters and walked two.
Makenzie Miller was the losing pitcher.
Lorelei Langley came in to relieve Kile and collected a save for her trouble.
The Lady Waves accumulated 19 hits in the game with Collier the leading hitter, going four-of-five at the plate.
Jarnigan, Collier, Nickell and Kyker Johnston also notched multiple hits.
