Rockwood Business and Professional Women will celebrate the culmination of National Business Women’s Week with a luncheon meeting at noon on Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 190 Circle Drive, Harriman.
There will be no cost for the luncheon but reservations should be made to organization President Lee Ann Gaddis, leeann4002@yahoo.com, in order to plan for enough food.
In addition to the luncheon there will be a short program on bullying, a real issue with many of our younger people, particularly young women. A middle school student at a regional school, Zara, will speak. Also speaking and answering questions will be Dr. Ann M. Callahan, professor in the college of social work at Eastern Kentucky University.
Rockwood BPW was established in October 1921 with 16 charter members. It is the oldest civic organization in Rockwood and one of the oldest in Roane County. Six months after organizing, Rockwood BPW members established the Rockwood Public Library, providing the first books and paying the librarian’s salary as a community service.
National Business Women’s Week was first observed in 1928. In 1932 President Herbert Hoover was the first president to issue a letter recognizing the week, celebrated during the third week in October each year.
Every year women in the workforce take a stronger, more empowering class. They chair boards and build upon successes. Today, women-owned businesses generate nearly $1.8 trillion in sales of privately owned companies.
