United Cleanup Oak Ridge has donated $50,000 to Oak Ridge High School’s athletics program as part of its community commitment to children’s physical and mental health. The company made the announcement at the ORHS Oct. 13 football game against Bearden High School.
UCOR recently announced its increased focus on mental and behavioral health for employees, their families, and the community with a donation to the Emory Valley Center. The donation to ORHS ($10,000 per year over a five-year period) extends that commitment to the local community.
UCOR recognizes that stress levels and resulting mental health impacts are on the rise for adults and students. Research reported in the journal of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise Science shows that students who take part in high school athletics not only experience increased physical and mental health, but also have stronger academic performance. The company’s donation supports making athletic programs available to more students.
“Our mental and behavioral program is the company’s latest addition to our comprehensive safety program,” said Chris Caldwell, UCOR Communications, Community Relations, and Educational Outreach Manager. “UCOR’s cleanup work for the Department of Energy is all about honoring Oak Ridge’s proud legacy and enabling a future of new science and national defense missions and career opportunities at the Oak Ridge Reservation for these students.”
