The Roane County Commission selected Robert Herrell to fill the vacant school board seat in District 5/6.
“A lifelong Kingston resident, graduated Kingston, his wife, his daughter graduated from Kingston,” Commissioner David Brackett said. “His son is currently enrolled at Roane County High School.”
Brackett nominated Herrell for the position during a special-called meeting on Monday at the courthouse.
“He is glad and willing to serve if he gets appointed,” Brackett said.
Herrell was the only person nominated for the vacant seat. He received a unanimous vote from the County Commission.
“When I approached him about the need he said I’ll step in and do it,” Brackett said. “He loves his community.”
Herrell wasn’t in attendance for the meeting due to a scheduling conflict, but he expressed his interest in the position in a letter that was provided to commissioners.
“It would be an honor to serve for the men and women who work within the school system but most importantly serve the children,” the letter said.
The school board seat Herrell was appointed to on Monday was previously held by Nancy Hamilton. She resigned in January to accept a seat on the County Commission.
“I think Robert Herrell is an excellent choice for the city of Kingston,” Hamilton said after Monday’s meeting. “He knows our community and I think he has the trust of the constituents in our district.”
All three school board seats in District 5/6 will be on the ballot in the Aug. 1 election. Rob Jago was the only person to file to run in the district as of Monday. The deadline is April 4 at noon.
“I do understand that this is temporary and will be filled with an elected person in August,” Herrell’s letter said.
The appointment doesn’t prevent Herrell from running in the election.
“If things work out, he might be interested in running,” Brackett said.
